A New Pottery Wheel in My Advanced Pottery Class

I take classes at two different senior centers. One of my classes is located pretty far from where I live because I needed to use a pottery wheel which was not offered at the center where I take the majority of my classes.

I had been asking the art director for a pottery wheel for several weeks at the center that was closer to my home. When I went to class today, I discovered that we had a pottery wheel that was ready for me to use! I was so excited and I was able to work the whole time without a lot of interruption from other students.

One of my friends in the class asked me if I would show her how to use the pottery wheel. She was surprised at how quickly I was able to go from a ball of clay to either a bowl or a small vase. One of the advantages of using a pottery wheel versus building objects by hand is the speed in which you are able to produce objects.

My art teacher had also been working on the wheel and she asked me some questions about pulling up the walls of the clay body. I showed her what I had learned in my other classes and she was able to pull up the walls of the clay body that she was working on too.

My art teacher is very talented in many things, but she said that she did not have a lot of experience throwing clay.

Once I finished throwing three vessels, I then showed one of my classmates who asked me to demonstrate the process for her.

I was surprised at how quickly she was able to center the clay on the wheel and even get to the point where she could produce a usable object. Centering play was not that easy for me when I first learned how to do it. This particular student is very talented with sculpting clay, even though one skill has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

I am looking forward to my next class, even though we only have one pottery wheel for the whole class. Some of the students want to learn how to use it, and others are content to continue to build their projects by hand. I am just grateful that the art director was able to obtain a pottery wheel for our class.

Enjoy your day.
