Sharing With You a Recent Charcoal Drawing

(Edited)

Hi Steemians, sharing with you a recent portrait drawing commission. I used charcoal, pencil, 160gsm A3 paper, putty rubber and blending stump. I will share the process with you.

I start with a quick sketch drawing in pencil of all the general vertical and horizontal contours in the model. I use a 4H pencil for very basic shapes and then as I add more details I use HB and 4B pencils.

I then use a charcoal stick to go over all of the darkest areas in the model I am drawing from. Using charcoal is what will allow a greater range of tones for more realism and a greater over all effect.

I then use a blending stump to blend the tones with a smoother transition and a putty rubber or regular rubber to remove tones on the face adding more contrast. I also use the putty rubber to add highlights to the hair.

I make some final adjustments to make sure the proportions and values are correct before the finished piece.

Finished!

That is so beautiful portrait and so wonderfully done. Love this technique and how you created a contrast while shading the face!
