Mona Venushka - Acrylic on Canvas
Venusian 'Trout Pout'
This was a fun painting that I completed recently during the early days of our 'Stay at Home' directive.
Thankfully, I had a spare canvas to work on which meant I didn't need to visit any public spaces in those first days and I was able to work completely uninterrupted. Still, it took quite a few weeks until I felt like it was 'finished'.
The first steps involved lots of 'mark-making' where I painted rather abstractly until I started to see an image emerge from my marks. The one that really set the scene was a large spiral that started from the middle of the canvas and spiralled out to the edge ending in a large sweep that became Venushka's shoulder.
I did take some photos of the process and had taken a photo of the spiral before it was painted over, however the SD card in my camera ended up with an error and unfortunately, I wasn't able to retrieve those photos.
At first, it started out as an exercise in trying out some different painting techniques but as the painting progressed, I became more and more pleased with the result, especially when those techniques worked and produced the effect I was trying to achieve.
Of course, there's always room for improvement however I definitely got to the stage where I felt like the painted was becoming overworked and feared that I'd lose or ruin the painting altogether.
Eventually, it felt finished and I was able to put the paintbrush down and walk away.
Another aspect was only using four colours throughout the entire painting, as well as a mixture of those four colours to create some subtle shades.
The main colours I used for Venushka, were a Deep Teal Green and Phthalo Blue; for the background, I used a very light pale blue mixed with a deep purple which created a beautiful lavender shade. I also utilised a paint conditioner that thins the paint down and creates a more translucent colour. This came in very handy for the skin texture over her back.
The left hand side of the painting remains clear although I did have visions of Venushka holding her long alien fingers up in an 'OK' hand symbol... BUT I didn't think I could pull it off and decided against it.
I'm not really sure what type of Alien she is... sometimes reminding me of a snake, at other times, a lizard.
Although, it appears that she does like pouting for the camera so I'm guessing she probably has an influencing instagram account with lots of Venusian followers. lol
Hope you like it, maybe I'll continue the series and paint her some friends or perhaps a handsome partner..!
Until next time... xxx
Be safe and stay sane... ❤️❤️❤️
