Pumpkins.... My Monday Missions entry!

(Edited)

Eating them, cutting them into something nice is not a habit in the Netherlands.

Halloween is not celebrated either. Ofcourse some shops try to talk people into it and some give it a try. Each celebration is a way to make money.

At some schools, children can cut a pumpkin if they take the pumpkin with them.
My children hate those extra school activities. Mainly because it is no fun and they can not do as they like. They find it disturbing most children do not even try, just make a mess out of it and the classroom.

As they were younger we did cut pumpkins. One of my children (the animator) made real art out of it. We found it hard to save them. Outside we once tried but the dogs ate it. Not as it was still "fresh" but completely rotten!

One year we combined it with high tea at a garden center, Intratuin.
It was not such a great success besides of the fact they forgot to serve our high tea afterwards and we had to wait ages and ask several times. It was (the high tea) extremely expensive for what was finally served which was of a bad quality.

To make it easier for the children we draw the face they liked on the pumpkin.

If you wonder what is done with the inside...it is thrown away!
Pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin seeds or saving them to plant pumpkins is no habitin the Netherlands. Pumpkins are very expensive with us, not a first choice to buy if it comes to food.

If pumpkins are very expensive there, then it would seem reasonable to not want to waste the seeds and pulp. That is a little confusing to me, but it is nice to see the children having fun. @tipu curate

It is not a custom to eat pumpkins. You can buy some very small ones at a flowershop which Intratuin is too (gardening shop) but seldom see them for sale as food in a supermarket, on the market.

If something is not seen as food it is clear it is thrown away by the gardening shop Intratuin. Generally speaking we do not buy this as food, we do not grow it. It is decoration.
These pumpkins were given by the shop.

Thanks for responding. Happy Ednesday! 🔆💕

I see. Thank you for the explanation. I learned something new today. 🙂
Baked and salted pumpkin seeds are a real treat to some. I love them, but it seems to be either people love them, or don't care for them at all. Also my favorite pie is pumpkin pie with some whipped cream on top! yummy :)
Have a great Wednesday as well! 🔆😎
