Amazing Nature: Finding Food In The Snow

(Edited)

My entry to @adalger’s #amazingnature contest. check his post Here for more info.

As most of you know I live on P.E.I. in Eastern Canada and January is a month when Ole Man Winter blows lots of snow and cold air our way.

Yesterday was no exception and the birds and squirrel were coming around in the morning to see what food I put out. They got fed early and by noon the back deck was covered in snow.

Often there will be ravens but they have been timid to come to close lately and I was surprised to suddenly see one sitting on the deck railing. The big bird landing this close to the kitchen window must be a sign of more snow coming this way.

The deck was already covered in snow but I could see the raven was cold and hungry. Small icicles were hanging from his beak.

What to give him? I had juice left over from cooking steak and dipped a couple slices of bread in it and tossed it out on the deck.

The raven stayed around until all the bread was gone.

No doubt the raven feels safer up high and after a few beak fulls used the roof as a dining table. Some snow mixed in the food didn’t bother him a bit.

The raven, with snow on his beak, seems to be much happier and fuller.

He’s checking out the area from the barn roof to make sure there is nothing left to devour before he went on his way. I hope he comes back another day.

Nature is amazing and birds are clever creatures. This raven knew, if he showed himself, I would put outside something for him to eat.

Birds have an inner radar concerning weather and this bird knew the snow was getting heavier and filled up. He would have to stay in the dense forest for a few days until it cleared.

Photo taken with my iPad from the kitchen window as the snow increased.

Ohh.. Two years now for you.. Happy Birthday ^^.. and thank you for the post of this Happy Birds day :)

Treating this raven so nicely, he for sure will visit you once more .. In old Norse Mythology Odin had two raven, that he send away on a fly every day, they were his "thought" (Huginn) and "mind" (Muninn).. You should be honored, as the old gods watch over you, knowing that you are a protector of Mother Nature creation. . Lucky you ^^

I wish you a nice week :)

Thanks @kamrunnahar! I like to help the animals and birds especially this time of year when it’s hard for them to find food. 😊

Loved reading about and seeing the raven Jo!! You have a good heart! I love that you look out for the critters and birds. Looks like you were getting a lot of snow come down. We just escaped the last snowfall (for the most part) here again. Maryland weather can be a bit crazy sometimes. 😏 🙂

Thanks Cowboy! Hubs has the snowblower and has always been able to clear the snow from the driveway. The main roads are always plowed first thing. If there is a bad storm then it is wise to just stay home.

If you you google for NFLD (Newfoundland) Canada, they are in crisis because of about a meter snow fall. Luckily we have never had that much.

I saw a little on the news tonight about that heavy snowfall! Like homes almost buried because of the drifts and stuff. wow!

It showed on the news where in NFLD the snow was up to the top of doors. People couldn’t open the doors to the houses. Cars were covered. No one could travel on the roads as they were indistinguishable. The army was called in to help clear the snow.

It is an emergency situation alright, especially if someone needed dialysis or some other treatment.

I think they are finally getting dug out after four days and getting stocked up on groceries.

Newfoundlanders have a wicked sense of humor and are now posting jokes about the record breaking snow.

Many put on skis, snowshoes and other winter sport paraphernalia to navigate around their neighbourhoods long before The roads were cleared.

One young man was seen trudging through a snow drift while wearing a T-shirt, shorts and a straw hat. In a video posted to Twitter, the man set up a lawn chair on top of the huge snow pile, then took a satisfied sip of a beer.

Birds always enjoy those extra little bits you leave for them, I would imagine in the winter months with snow it would be more regular visits.

Yes there are many birds coming by regularly in the winter. it is hard for them to find food in January and February and important to help them out.

Some birds go south to warmer weather and I won’t see The great blue heron, robin and many others until springtime.
