I am fascinated by the beauty of nature, if : A. You WANT to see it and B. You take time to see the beauty and learn a thing or two about it.

Black alder or Alnus glutinosa, is a common tree species. We can find this tree wherever there is sufficient moisture, along waterfront, stream and river banks, trouser forests and swamps. Just as where we live. Easy to identify are the dark appearance of the tree with somewhat purple buds, the alder plugs, these are the woody female catkins, the slightly sticky round leaves with a truncated or even slightly rounded top. The young branches are also somewhat sticky. But they are dried also very decorative.

Male kittens are elongated to broad, linear and slightly purple-red in color. Black alder, Alnus glutinosa Gaertnr, is a tree or shrub from the Birch family. The plant grows on all soils, but prefers wetter places such as water sides. They draw a lot of water from the soil and evaporate much of it. They have a fairly deep and extensive root system with root tubers. These tubers can become more than 5 cm (fist thick). In it lives, in symbiosis with the Els, a bacterium Frankia sp., Which can bind nitrogen from the atmosphere, from which the host benefits.

As a tree, the Black alder can reach a height of 24 m, but that is rare. Here they are about 3 meter. The tree is usually multi-trunked. The bark is black-brown and strongly grooved. Young twigs are somewhat triangular, they carry resin glands, which can make them somewhat sticky. This is in contrast to the branches of the White alder that are round in cross-section and do not feel sticky. You often see the Black alder in ditches along ditches, but you also find the species as a coppice. The so-called Elzenbroek forests can occur on very wet soils. The largest primeval forest in the Netherlands, mined in 1869 partly by strong dewatering, was the Beekbergerwoud or Elzenbos to the southeast of Apeldoorn. The buds are bare and are on a stem. The Black alder is easily recognized by the large round to inverted egg-shaped leaves. The top is blunt, edged and the edges are roughly double sawn. The leaves are 4-11 cm long and have five or six pairs of veins. The underside is bare with the exception of the veins. The young parts are sticky.

The catkins with male flowers can grow to 12 cm long when they mature. They start to bloom before leaves come on the tree. Alder pollen is moderately allergenic and since the Black alder is one of the first tree species to start flowering in the winter, it is one of the species causing the hay fever. The woody, female catkins do not fall apart at maturity such as with the Berk (Betula). The female kittens are oval, with three to five pieces together and are stalked. The alder plugs are formed by the female flowers. It is the bracts of these flowers that have become woody.

The fruits are in their armpits. The alder plugs stay on the tree for up to eighteen months. Alder can therefore easily be recognized in winter by these alder plugs. In the pictures i made this morning you see both male and female, don’t want to discriminate. The orange-colored wood of the Black alder is very resistant to rotting, on the condition that it remains completely submerged. Here you see most in the water as the wet lands are always under water and if not we have spo much rain that the ground is very healthy to grow.

Your posts are always soo informative and packed with pictures ^^ .. How do you manage this all the time, while posting on a regular basis.. You are a real creativity mashine ! .. Do I see it right, that male and female ones are hanging side by side on the same branch? .. Must be a lot of whispering between the branches at night, hehe

@BrittandJosie you are such a treasure trove of knowledge! I hadn't ever really thought about the hermaphrodite nature of alder, even though it was right there under my nose my whole life... Thank you for sharing 💚
