May ProgBlog #3: meh

avatar

There's been a few sucky days and it's basically not going to improve until I can get one specific task out of the way and I'm getting seriously annoyed with the blocker.

Once done I'm not dealing with it again.

On the bright side, there has been a number of great days (if busy) because my parents are up, so everything is generally going to be great once this mess is over and done with.

And then with some luck I'll start making appreciable progress again x_x

I'm finally onto the feet of the reeeeeeeeeeeeeetopo.

I stupidly thought it would be quicker than the hands and it was til I started having to figure out how I'm going to split so I have enough to make the toes. I'm feeling slightly more confident again about the flow so I'm hoping I won't have to do too much rig testing before I can put the hair and textures back on.

On the Acaedia side of things this was most of my view for a fair few hours:

And this is where we ended up.

And that's where I'm leaving that for now, as some doors need to be stolen from commswitch (where I got the wall panels and the doughnut floors from) and put into the conference room and the office doorways and I need to keep building out. The office is one of the few places that will actually get revisited and decorated (and I'll tweak that desk a lot and make it some chairs, probably kneeling chairs rather than office chairs as those things will be quite big and there is a section of the office that has beanbags and a nest swing/chair/thing).

The office probably has terrible feng shui with all those doors x_x

And Ter'wyn was probably mentally facepalming trying to think of how to defend that mess in an emergency.

But um it will probably look cool when it's done maybe? x_x

After an embarrassingly long time, I've also finally learned how to control beziers.

It made for some nice curvy pillars. Kind of a relief for when I start making the climbing plants as I don't really want to use as many control points in plants as I do in hair.

The extreme long shot:

This post also appears on my blog.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) Everything you need to know is (probably) here and if it isn't just ask (sorry the link goes offsite to my blog where the layout is how I want rather than the one here which is only here because the original one was).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Have you looked at MB-Lab,or MakeHuman or DAZ 3D?

I looked into Daz pretty much when I first started out (a very long time ago now and haven't looked at it again since) and MakeHuman a lot later, and the same problems with both were the amount of work I'd have to do modifying the meshes for the non-Base characters (and there were numerous other issues with Daz though I can't remember if that's the one there were copyright issues with or if it was some other 3d app I was investigating at the time).

Hadn't heard of MB-Lab til now and damn that looks amazing O_O I'm quite intrigued by the muscle rigging system thing, kind of really want to have a play around with that. It looks like I'm going to have the same problem as the previous two with my non-Base characters though ^_^;

maybe if they introduce a modular building system like Rigify has or already have one that I just missed in my quick skim of the docs

Thanks for giving me something else to keep in mind/an eye on :D

I'm still struggling to get back to 3D. Between painting and programming, especially programming, I have limited time and mental bandwidth to attack a new learning curve.

Mind you, I'm starting to make real progress now with getting up to speed with node.js development. Things have progressed from frustration and confusion to the excitement of what can be achieved.

If I devoted the same time and energy to Blender as I have these past months with Node.js, I think I'd be pumping out some interesting things. It also helps that I bought a new PC, 32 threads, 64GB RAM. I'm still saving up for a decent graphics card to top it off.

There is usually a point somewhere where you have to work out what you want to put time in, it's pretty hard to invest the amount of time required to get good at everything you're interested in :)

...yes, I know we are finite beings, but some people seem to manage more. I'd like to be one of those. 😀

I used to think other people were managing more too, especially the ones that were a lot more organised than me. If the people I could ask questions of were anything to go by, they’re still doing less of other things that they would like to be doing just like the rest of us mere mortals 😆

Congrats on the bezier mastery! I remember that being a tricky beast. Which OS are you working on these days?

That wide shot of the building looks absolutely amazing! It's coming along really well. How detailed is the inside? Or, are you doing a separate mold for the interior?

Been Manjaro for a while, but I can't remember if you've asked me this question before and how long ago XD

Thanks ^_^ The inside isn't that detailed, there's basically placeholder blocks everywhere like in this kitchen where they're for a large fridge/cool room/thing and counters

Screenshot_20210517_221141.jpg

All the rooms that have fixed furniture like that have got placeholder blocks and basically I'll detail and decorate any room that happens to get used in a scene and the rest will just kind of be there.

The Acaedia file (and by extension any given building file where there's a chance of going inside) will probably be gargantuan as it's going to have everything in it, I'm trying to sort out the collections in a sensible manner as I'm intending to link whatever I need in whatever scenes I'm working on.

I'll probably have to rethingi the collections again when I'm done as currently as much as I'm trying to sort them in a manner that will be sensible for linking I'm more sorting them in a manner that's helping me build

I tend to build from the inside so it's highly possible that even buildings you're only ever going to see the outside of will at least have a floor plan just so I know I've made them big enough.

Love how that ELS ( extreme long shot ) looks!

there has been a number of great days (if busy) because my parents are up,

Does this mean that they are kid sitting and you can spend more time on your creativity? ;<)

A big hug from Portugal!

I love doing the ELSs, it's very satisfying after having been working in close quarters building up the rooms and then being able to zoom out and unhide all the other floors and watch it all coming together XD

Buildings are a lot quicker than characters too

My kids don't need sitting, just adult supervision ;D (which basically means being in the same area or a short trip away if there's a problem and they need to recall you)

And there was less time spent on working because I was out with them when I wasn't working or taking the kids to stuff, but it's all good as they were only up for a few weeks.

[hugs]

Mad props to your ability to stare at that same screen for so long. The fruits of your labor seem worth it though!

Priorities, right? XD That's me in every base building game ever. Like "hmmm....it's easier for people to get in....but gosh this just looks so much nicer!"

Thank you for sharing! Fingers crossed for less "sucky" days and more positive ones!

Thanks ^_^

Yep, both form and function is important XD

Ter'wyn was only annoyed as it would require his entire unit to adequately defend a serious assault on that room, so he'd be more likely to just fight out whichever door had the fewest/easiest to deal with attackers and RUN AWAAAAAYYYYYYYY

Though now I'm staring at the supports and wondering if the weight is distributed enough, if the curvy pillars are helping enough, if I need another strut under the almost 90deg curves just under the overhang, or if the "bonecrete" (whatever that is XD) is strong enough.

Screenshot_20210518_085639.jpg

do not listen to my sibling I never overthink things ever >_>

Thanks again ^_^ On the bright side I do usually have good or at least average days, the ones that actually suck are very few and far between :)

Haha, the strategic retreat!😆 A useful strategy that is usually only abandoned due to ego! Live to win the war another day always seemed like a bonus to the plan!

Oh, I totally see what you mean. Architecture is tough. If you do end up putting a strut down there worst case you get additional structural supports. Maybe you can find a way to have them double as a "lattice" of sorts for a biolumen vine for lighting.

Glad that there is minimal suckage! Life can be a rollercoaster!

The Royal Guard and Warriors are really big on honour but ego be damned they will run the hell away if the problem looks too big for them to head on and they have that option; they'll do whatever it takes to keep their wards alive and intact XD

Architecture is tough, I don't know enough about it x_x I am thinking of just putting some guides up there and growing a vine up it as I suspect the climbing plants that cover the building (that I obviously haven't done yet) not only provide light (with their pretty glowing leaves) but are also helping hold it together.

Architecture in my head-universe is interesting xD

only vaguely related, I was totally going to do architecture at uni, but had a heads up from one of my cousins who was in his final year while I was in high school, and it looked so stressful and complicated that I changed my mind in a hurry x_x
