August ProgBlog #2: back to the grind

avatar

This is a really boring phase where things are super slow going but they need to be done to keep me happy.

Other people obsess about mesh smoothness and stuff in obscure places like the soles of feet right?

Yes I'm aware the tail is still a bit of a mess, seems like I'm going to have to edit the normal map for that one -_-

I'm kind of mostly trying to repair shapes but also seem to create a hell of a lot of dents before it will smooth out. I don't know why that is. I guess the autosmooth gets confused sometimes.

I'm also having to fight off the compulsion to reduce the polycount for the sake of reducing the polycount which is one of the reasons why the wireframe is only on sometimes (when I'm trying to figure out why something is insistently remaining rough or a weird shape, it's usually because some polygons refuse to rake or reform so brush needs to change size) as most of what I'm trying to do is correct shape and smooth things out.

Having the studio lighting option now is incredibly useful as I remember only using the light setup I'd had when I was first playing with dynatopo in Blender a hundred million years ago and it got me into a hell of a lot of trouble (my weird light setup made for weird shadows and whatnot which made me not notice when things were too high or too deep and then I somehow managed to tear the mesh but it was before the viewport refactor which meant switching into edit mode basically made Blender completely unusable).

I still can't believe how nice sculpting feels now (even with the annoyances of the bumps that sometimes either won't go away no matter what or take forever to go away for whatever reason), even though I'm starting to get to the stage of wishing I could hurry up and finish it as I want to get onto the next stage and try out my new retopo toy.

This post also appears on my blog.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) Everything you need to know is (probably) here and if it isn't just ask (sorry the link goes offsite to my blog where the layout is how I want rather than the one here which is only here because the original one was).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Come hang out on Discord with us!

Haha I guess it's what you're used to, I find this easy sometimes, hard sometimes, tedious sometimes, and I find painting with watercolours very hard XD Especially on paper where I can't undo x_x lol.

Thanks :D

I would like to have the skill and ability to do these things. the most important thing is to be so patient. I appreciate you. ♥️

I didn't always have the skill or ability to do these things ;D Like with everything else it's just working on and learning about it :)

Okay I can be a little bit obsessive sometimes ^_^;

Thanks ^_^

Great 3d art work. I started learn 3d art work because your work encouraged me.

Thanks!

3d is great fun but can have a steep learning curve, so don't be discouraged if you find it hard at first :)

you might be lucky and find it easy some people do XD

I remember trying to work with CAD for engineering and it was pretty cool but at the same time, kinda complicated but I didn't do anything as complex as what you're doing! This looks great mate, I'm sure it will come out top but patience young wizard 😁

I feel like CAD would be a lot more complicated because you have to be so exact with your measurements XD Here I just make sure the character's height and proportions are right and then fit the clothes on XD

I'm anticipating hearing the despairing wails of architects when I finally get around to building sets :D

I have a lot of patience ;D and thanks, I hope so :D
