southers' Film Review: Dallas Buyers Club (2013), Living is Not Easy

Time is probably the most fair existence in this world. Whether it is a celebrity or a tramp, everyone has a same amount of time per day. When we were young, we didn’t have an accurate perception of time, and we confidently thought that time would not run out. In the face of heavy homework, most people will feel that there will be a lot of time to read the book, to travel to the place we want and to meet the person who is destined. Even we think that "limited time" is not a problem. Under such a premise, our life experience seems to be narrow and narrow. Actors are often considered to be able to experience a variety of life careers. Then, aren’t we experiencing different lives through watching movies? We are immersed in a dark cinema, completely forgetting our senses, experience, and emotions, entering the strange world without any defense. Like a jungle explorer, experiencing a seemingly different experience from ourselves. In this fictional life, in the depths of these characters and their conflicts, we vent our emotions, follow the characters in the play, to learn, to appreciate and even to reflect on our own life.Sometimes good movies can even make us discover ourselves, like regaining new life. "Dallas Buyers Club" is such an excellent film in my heart. This movie is based on the real experience of Ron Woodrow.

The leading actor of the film, Ron Woodroof, is an electrician who advocates the ultimate individualism and spirit of freedom. He used drugs, alcohol, gambling, and lived a chaotic sex life. He even joked that "there is always a death" and live a life of dreaming and dying. At the beginning of the film, Ron's physical condition has been different, the sound of electric drills lingering in his head, and he often fainted inexplicably. Even so, Ron did not go to the hospital to check his body. By chance, he entered the hospital because of a work-related injury, but was told that he was infected with HIV, leaving only thirty days of life. Ron began to anger and refused to accept, trying to understand the AIDS through access to information, and slowly began to accept this fact. When everything was going well, it is difficult for people to see what the real self is. After facing huge difficulties, people will start to think the humanity and the meaning of life. Ron began to think about his own life. What exactly is he wants most? In fact, Ron is far less open-minded than he imagined. Facing the disappointment, contempt and ridicule from his companions, and the lack of effective drugs, he began to understand the complexity and ugliness of human nature.

Time ruthlessly passed away, Ron has never been so eager to live so much. He decided to take the risk of trying experimental toxic drugs - AZT, and even rushed to Mexico to seek a glimmer of hope. The clock of life kept moving forward, and the day of the trip to Mexico was just 29th day from the doctor’s diagnosis day. Ron looked at the short gun at hand, picked it up and put it down. Finally, the sorrow that had accumulated for a month broke out on this empty road. Ron, such a pure man, burst into tears. He is a typical western cowboy in the United States. How can he give up easily, boldly, kindly, and resolutely? Even if the previous life is like a farce, the gorgeous and beautiful curtain will eventually fall. But this life also brings the power of Ron's new life. The complexity of humanity also changed the temperament of Ron in the play. From the original homophobia, he began to understand how to respect the people around him, even if he had transvestites, even if he had different sexual orientations. Of course, Ron is not a perfect hero. He saves thousands of people in suffering. He also has his own shortcomings. He has a little homophobia, and the membership fee of the club is pretty high. He does not accept patients with the reason of sympathy. However, this is a living real person. He is both kind and cruel, fragile and strong, and upright and cowardly.

In the 7 years of AIDS, he was trying to be self-discipline, quitted smoking drugs and alcohol, lived a healthy life, and fighted with the FDA, pharmaceutical companies, etc. The tenacious struggle of the power organs has won the appreciation and respect of the people around his. And he has shown his vitality and lived the value of life. At the end of the film, Ron's swaying in the hidden corners of the opening of the film formed a sharp contrast. After experiencing the catastrophe of life, Ron finally reached his wish, which is riding the bull again. Although his electric drill-like squeaks still echoed in his mind at this time, he was fearless in his heart. Perhaps after watching this movie, we can try to answer the old question that Aristotle put forward in "Ethics": How should one spend his life?

Love life, respect yourself, live happily and forcefully according to your own wishes, because you only have one chance. Living itself is the greatest meaning.

My Score is 8.9/10
