Ramy: A surprising winner at last Golden Globes
One of the biggest surprises, if not the biggest surprise, of the last golden globe was surely the one related to the choice of the best comedy of the year.
Ramy has prevailed over much more quoted titles like Barry and Marvelous Mrs Maisel, arousing great curiosity in all those who had lost sight of such an important TV series. And Ramy Youssef's TV series was important. Important because he was able to throw in the pile a theme of capital importance as that of religiosity, spirituality mixing it with the contemporary and the universality of a story of a young man in his thirties looking for his place in the world. Ramy is the story of a young Muslim in today's America, the Trumpian America where the echo of September 11 is still very strong. But Ramy is also a young man who is struggling to emerge and find his way. The unbridled search for something that makes him happy or at least aware of his condition is seen as the ultimate goal of this life, spent trying in every way to safeguard his purity of soul by living according to the precepts of Islam. In a Western world where in addition to the loss of religiosity there has also been a gradual loss of spirituality, Ramy reminds us how being young does not mean being far from God and from caring for one's own spirit. If anything, he shows us how difficult it is to be so. Difficulties born of the very vision that society projects onto us. A consumerist and materialistic vision where having counts more than being and appearing is the mantra that guides us daily between a selfie and a tweet. Ramy tries to be at the crossroads of the 2 things, not giving up the pleasure of life but without chasing its excesses. Being a Muslim in New York today is not easy. There is so much mistrust of Arabs and what they represent in the collective imagination of Trumpian America. The discomfort felt by the community is high. To this discomfort Ramy adds a very personal, purely existential one. The TV series finds a strong balance between the 2 components and manages to abstract itself from what it tells, emerging for its impartiality. There is the desire to explore genuinely, serenely and objectively the Arab world and the life of a young Muslim on American soil. He does so through small nuances, showing us mosques and bars, meetings between friends and family diatribes, traditions and contemporaneity. An original and powerful product that Hulu has had the merit of bringing to our attention.
Una delle più grosse sorprese, se non la più grossa sorpresa, degli ultimi golden globe è stata sicuramente quella legata alla scelta della miglior comedy dell'anno.
Ramy ha prevalso su titoli ben più quotati come Barry e Marvelous Mrs Maisel, destando fortissima curiosità in tutti quelli che avevano perso di vista una serie tv cosi importante. Ed importante lo è stata davvero la serie tv di Ramy Youssef. Importante perchè ha saputo lanciare nel mucchio un tema di capitale importanza come quello della religiosità, della spiritualità mescolandolo alla contemporaneità e all'universalità di un racconto di un giovane trentenne in cerca del suo posto nel mondo. Ramy è il racconto di un giovane musulmano nell'America odierna, l'America trumpiana dove l'eco dell'11 settembre è ancora fortissimo. Ma Ramy è anche un ragazzo che fatica ad emergere e trovare la sua strada. La ricerca sfrenata di qualcosa che lo renda felice o quantomeno consapevole della propria condizione è vista come fine ultimo di questa vita, trascorsa a cercare ad ogni modo di salvaguardare la sua purezza d'animo vivendo secondo i precetti dell'Islam. In un mondo occidentale dove oltre alla perdita della religiosità vi è stata anche una graduale perdita della spiritualità, Ramy ci ricorda come essere giovani non vuol dire essere lontani da Dio e dalla cura del proprio spirito. Semmai ci mostra come esserlo sia difficile. Difficoltà nate dalla visione stessa che la società proietta su di noi. Una visione consumistica e materialistica dove avere conta più dell'essere e l'apparire è il mantra che ci guida quotidianamente tra un selfie ed un tweet. Ramy prova ad essere a cavallo delle 2 cose, non rinunciando al piacere della vita ma senza inseguirne gli eccessi. Essere un musulmano a New York oggi non è facile. C'è tanta diffidenza verso gli arabi e quello che rappresentano nell'immaginario collettivo dell'America trumpiana. Il disagio avvertito dalla comunità è alto. A questo disagio Ramy ne aggiunge uno personalissimo, prettamente esistenziale. La serie tv trova un forte equilibrio tra le 2 componenti e riesce soprattutto ad astrarsi da quel che racconta, emergendo per la sua imparzialità. C'è la voglia di esplorare genuinamente, serenamente e obiettivamente il mondo arabo e la vita di un giovane musulmano in terra d'america. Lo fa attraverso piccole sfumature, mostrandoci moschee e bar, incontri fra amici e diatribe familiari, tradizioni e contemporaneità. Un prodotto originale e potente che Hulu ha avuto il merito di portare alla nostra attenzione.
