AAA Review - Se7en - Classic thriller of the 90s

avatar

Se7en was a R rated dark thriller released in 1995 directed by David Fincher who was responsible for several other classic thriller like Fight Club, Gone Girl, as well as The Social Network. Se7en had a modest budget but went on to gross over $300 million worldwide and left countless approval ratings by critics. For me, it was one of the best crime thriller of all time.

Quick Summary

David Mills (Brad Pitt), a hot tempered detective, had just moved in to town with wife (Gwyneth Paltrow). Partnered with Somerset (Morgan Freeman), the duo started investigating a series of gruesome murder cases that seem to mimic the Seven Deadly Sins.

Totally unrelated individuals were found dead after cruelly tortured, which includes a stomach burst with forced feeding, and a forced suicide of an attorney, another was found strapped to his bed for exactly one year. Each of the murder represented one of the 7 sins (and hence the title of the movie).

With all the clues gathered from the murders, Detective Somerset was able to track down a suspect but both him and Mills were unable to make a successful arrest, with Mills almost getting killed by the suspect.

The following day, a man named John Doe surrendered himself at the police station. Through his lawyer, he was willing to admit all charges, on the condition that Mills and Somerset escort him to recover the remaining 2 murders.

Watch the movie to find out what happens at the end. Guaranteed to blow your mind!

Review (SPOILERS)

The ending of Se7en is very unexpected. We first saw the culprit only after 3/4 of the movie and starts to learn about him. Finally at the end, he was able to complete the perfect Seven Deadly Sins crimes in the most thrilling manner. Thought provoking. You begin to wonder if John Doe is just an insane guy or a damn brilliant criminal.

Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman put in an absolutely stunning performance in Se7en. Especially the younger actor, playing the hot tempered Detective, he brilliant acting from start to end is almost worthy of an Oscar nomination. The last moment of the movie, when he had to make that final decision, was one of the best scene in a movie for me.

Director David Fincher is a master of Thrillers, just watch Fight Club and Gone Girl and you will know. Se7en was shot in a dark grisly setting and there is always rain when the detectives ventured outdoor, except for the last scene when it was sunny. Coupled with great score, many suspenseful scenes add to the intensity of the movie.

Unlike most other detective movies during that period, Se7en had an unique antagonist. John Doe first appeared in the last half hour of the movie, surrendering himself. No cops chasing, no car crash, no explosions that were typical of 90s movies. Kevin Spacey plays the twisted murderer, but his name did not appear in the movie trailer or movie posters when released.

While we are waiting to see two more bodies towards the end to complete the Seven Deadly Sins, the movie gave audiences an unexpected twist. I really like movies where the bad guy wins. In Se7en's case, the bad guy died in the end, but he still won. So it was the first time we watched something like this, and probably will never again.

Yes, this was a great film. The end was such a surprise. I don't get surprised much anymore with movie endings. I usually figure out how they end before the first 15 minutes is up. This one was much different.
