Movie Review #46 - I, Tonya

I'm a big sports fan so I love to watch movies and series that have plots developed from outstanding sports events or athletes. In fact, I see everything that has to do with sports, it doesn't matter if I don't know much about the sport or the character, since in general, I enjoy a lot the plots that are created around because they generate a very entertaining and exciting atmosphere, and that was precisely what happened to me with I, Tonya, a film about an athlete marginalized from which I had never heard but whose personal story I liked very much because of the different twists and turns that the plot of this film offers us.

I, Tonya is a film that surprised me enormously by how dynamic and entertaining the story is, I never imagined that everything behind women's sports was so interesting, to see how women have to constantly fight against all kinds of nonsense and criticism to stand out at a sporting level is incredible, and even more so because they have to do it even in women's sports where they are seen as objects and not as high-performance people and athletes.

This film does take us on a kind of bizarre journey through the life of a woman who years ago was one of the best ice skaters in the United States. However here we won't have the typical story where the protagonist with sacrifice reaches the top, in fact, if anything defines this film is the word "atypical". Throughout the plot of this film, we will see how a super talented woman is constantly rejected and minimized by the judges of a sport that doesn't see her as the typical skater prototype (and certainly she isn't), like that woman who can become the face of ice skating.

Throughout the film we will see how Tonya Harding fights for her talent to be recognized beyond her appearance, because Tonya is not the typical delicate skater who takes care of her appearance and uses it as a complement to her sports career, here we have a rough, rude and very different woman, a woman who is able to face whoever and whenever she is, a woman mistreated by her mother and her boyfriend but in the end an extremely talented woman.

Everything in this film is really great because we have many entertaining nuances that offer us different dynamics through the different characters that make life in the film. The film basically shows us two sides of the same coin, first we see everything that Tonya had to go through to be recognized in an extremely divided sport that constantly judged women by their appearance and not by their talent, and on the other hand the whole problem that led Tonya to be separated from the Olympics because of the nonsense of her boyfriend and his friend who was believed himself as a secret spy, yes, a secret spy.... that's how bizarre this film is.

The whole film enchanted me, there was not a single moment that I did not enjoy watching and is that this film manages to fuse wonderfully the drama lived by a super talented woman to be successful in a super sexist and complicated sport, with the bizarre comedy that was generated from a toxic relationship with a man who would end up ruining it at a sporting level, a man who loved her but constantly abused her. This, as I told you, is not a sports story or a typical biopic, here we have a lot of social criticism through black humor and situations marked by satire that gives a wonderful twist to the whole plot turning it into something visually addictive. Without a doubt, this film enchanted me because it allowed me to know more about an extremely complicated sport and about the atypical and peculiar life of a woman.
