Snowden: An unceasing journey to reveal the truth

Here is my entry for the Triple AAA contest FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION (#01): "Favorite Directors" sponsor by @wiseagent and the TripleA Team, so check it out and participate!

Director of week #2: Oliver Stone

Oliver Stone is certainly not one of my favorites people because he has to get very involved in political issues linked to communist alliances almost for convenience, however as far as his work developing films I have to admit that he has managed to become one of my favorite directors, since usually his films offer a very intense reality tinge and aimed at showing a very specific social point, as he did with the movie Snowden where he lets us explore the life of a man who extracted secrets from the government through a very critical story obviously inclined to a very visible political ideology.

Snowden is a film with a highly centralized plot focused on demonstrating a point, a film that does not take alternate paths and that allows us to explore the apparent facts realistically without any fantasy or twist that makes the plot more interesting. The plot of this film focuses on the life of a CIA agent who worked in a clandestine installation analyzing and compiling all kinds of data, a highly intelligent and idealistic man who managed to enter the world of information like no one else, since he had at his disposal different surveillance software that were able to gather information in real-time from people by just putting the name and some particular data of the people. Yes, through this film we will explore in detail the different ways that the government of the United States has to violate the freedom of the people and to keep under surveillance its citizens and any person they want.

Basically the film takes us through a journey of enlightenment that allowed a man to realize that all the things he constantly did to get information from people were wrong, a man who discovered the value of freedom through his work in a security agency that abused his power to keep an eye on all sorts of targets. The plot advances in a great way because through the minutes we can see how were the different processes of surveillance, collection and analysis of information that towards the CIA, all through scenes tense and full of suspense where we see how this man revealed himself to an organization that constantly monitored people, everything to be free and be able to reveal to the world a conspiracy of abuse of power and gigantic violation of freedom.

At times the film feels elongated and somewhat tedious but it is because of the detail of the content we are seeing, because with the passing of the minutes and using scenes really well constructed we see the different challenges that Snowden had to go through to get to know the truth, to expose something of which he was a part. This is undoubtedly a film recorded with a lot of nuances of a documentary where we see testimonies and facts recreated in a spectacular way with incredible shots where we feel the fear and the risk that constantly covered a man who wanted the truth to be known, a man who wanted to expose an abusive organization.

The film is not perfect and there are moments when you feel the over-criticism of the American intelligence system, all clearly guided by the particular political position of a director who used the film to entertain, inform and critique a government system that does not align with his beliefs. However, in general, the film is very entertaining because the scenes are very dynamic and full of a very particular drama where we feel trapped by the well-built script that this film has. In short, this is a film that everyone should see because it allows us to explore the world of information as never before, through real and recurrent situations in our lives.
