Retro Film Review: Dream Man (1995)
Whoever, many years ago, saw Patsy Kensit in Absolute Beginners could have hardly imagined the rest of her career, in which she had to play tough policewomen. Yet, Kensit's career as one of silver screen's least imaginable lawwoman at least showed some variety - her characters in such films were at least little bit different from the others, sometimes even being hit with such bizarre afflictions like lycanthropy. Another such example could be found in Dream Man, 1995 low budget thriller directed by Rene Bonniere.
Here Patsy Kensit plays Kris Anderson, homicide detective with psychic abilities. During a party she meets David Mander (played by Andrew McCarthy), a man married to millionaire wife with political ambitions. Anderson is attracted to Mander, but this man is also source of rather unpleasant psychic visions. Those visions are becoming reality when Mander's wife is found stabbed to death. Mander becomes prime suspect, but, despite hard evidence, Anderson is convinced that the murderer is someone else, mostly because of her visions.
Scriptwriter Michael Alexander Miller exhausted all of his creativity on the premise of detective having psychic abilities. To make things worse, this para-scientific subplot is never properly explored or used. Instead we got just another uninspired low budget thriller with obligatory "whodunit", some lame eroticism and even lamer attempts on humour. On the other hand, Kensit and McCarthy try their best to breathe some life into this stillborn film and their efforts are among few reasons why Dream Man happens to be marginally watchable. The other reason, and only for most fanatical "trekkies", is presence of Denise Crosby (Lt. Tasha Yar from ST:TNG) in rather unusual role. However, the most of the viewers wouldn't do themselves a disservice if they skip this one.
