Rittenhouse. Victim? Hero!

It's like waiting for a loved one to die. You know it's coming. You've seen the disease, doctors and experts have predicted their death months in advance, the final moment is no surprise. But still... When it's there, when it finally happens, you're rendered speechless, in tears, heartbroken...

I've been thinking about how to put in words my feelings about the complete acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse on all counts, and the above is what I came up with. I'm sorry. I have no other way to describe the main news events in the U.S. this year. If the United States is defined by its constitution, something conservatives and Republicans love to remind us of every time they have the chance, she has been terminally ill for months now, and died when Kyle Rittenhouse not only was found not guilty and walked free after killing two persons and maiming a third by shooting them with an AR-15 rifle, but even got the hero-treatment afterwards. GOP Lawmakers Fall Over Each Other to Offer Jobs to Kyle Rittenhouse: "At least three MAGA Republicans reacted to Rittenhouse’s acquittal by fawning over the Kenosha shooter and offering him internships."

I've not meticulously followed the court case, and I'm not going to dig too deep into the legal particulars of it, but I've read the news here and there, I've watched some clips, like I suppose 90 percent of us have done. I think we all came to the same conclusion very early on: Rittenhouse was going to walk free. The persecution was laughable, the accusations of first degree murder were way too high a bar to meet, and the defense made a good case for self-defense. And the defense got a helping hand from a judge who was clearly on the side of the 17 year old shooter from the very beginning; he refused to punish Rittenhouse for violating the terms of his bail, excluded evidence of Rittenhouse's behavior before and after the shooting that spoke to his intent and lack of remorse, allowed the defense to mischaracterize the people Rittenhouse killed as "rioters," at the same time didn't allow his victims to be characterized as victims, yelled at prosecutors in front of the jury, dismissed an illegal gun charge against the gunman and had the jury applaud one of Rittenhouse's expert witnesses.

That's the gist of it, no matter on which side of this new divide you were on. His victims weren't allowed to be described as victims and, in the end, was satisfied to rule that Rittenhouse was in fact the victim in this case. All the "legalese" aside, this looks terrible. Even though none of the three victims were people of color, this feels like the official restoration of lynch law; far right activist groups will take this victory as a license to patrol legal demonstrations, to guard and protect properties with armed militias, in the safe knowledge that if lethal force is used there's a good chance they'll get away with it. As an outsider, looking at all this from outside American culture, I must say that American gun culture is a scary and crazy phenomenon to behold. But they'll defend their right to carry arms to the death, literally...

Like I said, this case was only America's last gasp, the inescapable conclusion of a disease that's been festering for years, and the nations has been on life-support since the instigators and perpetrators of the January 6 insurrection walked free and got paltry punishments respectively. I'm going to throw some definitions at you. Here's the dictionary definition of "treason": "the crime of betraying one's country, especially by attempting to kill or overthrow the sovereign or government." Here's the legal definition of the same crime: "Treason is "the highest of all crimes"—defined as intentionally betraying one's allegiance by levying war against the government or giving aid or comfort to its enemies. (In re Charge to Grand Jury, 2 Curt.C.C. 630 (D. Mass. Cir. Ct. 1851).) It's the most serious offense one can commit against the government and punishable by imprisonment and death. Treason prosecutions are rare, with around 40 federal prosecutions (and even fewer convictions) in U.S. history." What about the dictionary definition of sedition: "conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch." And last but not least, here's the punishment for treason: "Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States."

If the Democrats and the legal system are the doctors who had one final chance to prevent America, the idea of America, from dying, they threw it away by not charging the lawmakers who instigated the storming of the Capitol, and by not punishing the insurrectionists of treason or sedition. I've even heard left wing channels talk about the 41 months imprisonment for the Q-shaman, you know who I'm talking about, being too harsh. I'm sorry, but no. He and all the others who committed treason on that day should be in prison for a minimum of 5 years; that should be the major news each and every day one of them was given their verdict. That hasn't happened. Did you that treason is the only crime defined in the U.S. Constitution? Well, the constitution has been murdered. The legal system has lost. America R.I.P.

You do know that this works in reverse also right? When for many months people are left free to riot, burn and loot in cities it only encourages the same.
