Lefty Coming Out

As much as right wing pundits and politicians like to complain about being cancelled, historically as well as presently it's the left who's speech and ideologies are being repressed. The notion that the left has radicalized or that the right suffers from leftist suppression is ridiculous on its face.

For as long as western history has been written down, and up until the present day, "the left" has been suppressed. Its leaders have been imprisoned and murdered, its intellectual leaders' speech "cancelled." This is just a fact, there's no two ways about it, and any right-wing public "intellectual" who claims otherwise isn't to be taken seriously. I really don't have to go in-depth on a historical examination of the ubiquitous anti-left bias in the global north for anyone to see the truth of it. You can hear and see it in common parlance. We could simply start with the Latin words for "left" and "right"; "sinister" and "dexter" respectively. The word "sinister" is suggestive of darkness and evil, while the word "dexter" is associated with skill in performing tasks or "dexterity."

Left-handedness has been stigmatized in many cultures throughout history. Would you believe that there have been times and places in history when it was dangerous to "come out of the closet" as a left-hander? In the Middle Ages, for example, the left-hander lived in danger of being accused of witchcraft. Even the Devil himself was considered to be a "southpaw." The French word for "left" is "gauche," which is also used to describe socially awkward people.

Due to cultural and social pressures, many left-handed children were forced to write and perform other activities with their right hands. This conversion can cause multiple problems in the developing left-handed child, including learning disorders, dyslexia, stuttering and other speech disorders. Shifts from left- to right-handed are more likely to be successful than right to left, though neither have a high success rate to begin with.

Knowing all this, it should surprise no one that it took a while for left-handers to come out of the closet, so to speak. It should surprise no one that it seems that the number of left-handers has increased along with the slow rise in acceptance of left-handedness. Well, it would surprise no one except right-wing pundits like Jordan Peterson, that is... Peterson recently sat down with Kyle Kulinsky for an interview and they got to talk about Peterson's suspension from Twitter in the wake of his remarks about Elliot Page. He was suspended from Twitter for calling the trans actor's doctor a "criminal physician." Peterson complains about the number of trans-people increasing, and when Kyle points out that it's probably the same thing that happened with gay people, namely that the number probably doesn't increase but that with social acceptance they come out more, Peterson loses his cool. Just watch it, laugh about it like I did, and then remind yourself that scores of people still take this man seriously as he bashes progressives and leftists, and spreads dangerous anti-democratic ideas.
