Hating Kids

The far right has always been obsessed with children. They target the kids directly by interfering with their education, telling schools what's allowed to be taught. And indirectly by telling the parents that there are enemies at the gate who are after their kids, who want to turn them gay or make them hate their country.

The Republican Party says that it's the party that loves life. It's the pro-life party after all, and those dirty leftists are child-murderers, right? They say they're protecting human life when it's at its most vulnerable, because no fetus, unless it's the spawn of Satan himself, is able to protect itself. But that protection is gone as soon as the kid is born; they're also the party that opposes affordable child care, paid maternity leave, free school lunches, free higher education, universal healthcare, everything that would actually help children that are actually alive.

But we all know that the whole "pro-life" thing is just a nice way of saying "anti-women". It's not the children they're interested in, not in that way, not yet. What they're really interested in is to restore the hierarchies of old. Republicans and other conservative parties want to turn back the clock to times when men were the sole and undisputed head of the family. And for there to be a family, children have to be born; what better way then to put women in their place, than to deny them the power to control their own bodies, deny them the opportunity to take advantage of birth control? Don't fall for this pro-life scam; the Republicans' real work starts when the child is born, and that work is to teach them to hate and fear.

Hate, my friends, is the Republicans' only reason to exist. That's because the only right wing that's left, is the far right. Over a half century I've seen the ratchet effect play out in politics, not just in America, but over here in Europe as well: the right shifts over further to the right, and the left is unable to reel it back in, it just shifts to the right as well. That's why the left has lost its ability to enact meaningful policies that would actually benefit the working class, and it's a big part of the reason why people have lost trust in politics; it actually doesn't matter much which side you vote for, nothing ever really changes materially in your life.

For the left it's a relatively recent thing, but the right has always had that problem; they've never been able to offer the working class, the common citizen policies that would help them better their lifes. For the right it's always been a hate-game. Don't let anyone fool you; the "culture war" is a thing from the right wing, because they've always relied on cultural issues to win elections. I'm old enough to remember the "Satanic Panic" the pop-cultural panic in the 1980s, Reagan's war against gay men during the height of the aids pandemic and that the Republicans have fought against abortion ever since Roe v. Wade gave women that right. The homophobia, misogyny and transphobia of today isn't new, it's just clothed in modern, more extreme clothes.

And that's the place their obsession with your kids comes from. They don't care about your kids, other than grooming them into a new generation of other-hating, flag-waving potential voters. Children aren't born with hate. They are the purest human beings, with a deeply embedded capacity to care, empathetic, curious, sharing, loving, accepting and wanting nothing else than to be loved and accepted. The hate is something they have to learn from us, and from the Republican Party in particular. And the left doesn't do enough to protect those kids from this right wing school of hatred.
