Beauty (repost)

Beauty will save the world. I wish I could take credit for these words, but I'm just not artistic like that ;-) No, I stole them from famous philosopher and novelist Dostoevsky.

<brDostoevsky believed that art is humankind's most effective language, and he meant all art. His assertion was, and I agree, that art is the closest anyone can come to the experience that led to the creation of that art itself.

Art has the power to convey not only information, but emotion as well. The stories we tell each other, the pictures we show each other and the music we play for each other, shape in a large and very effective way who we are, not only as individuals, but entire societies, cultures and humanity as a whole. The words we speak, the actions we take, the stories we write, they cause ripples through present and future times and will influence generations to come.

There's this beautiful movie, by the The Wachowski Brothers, who also made "The Matrix". The title of this movie is "Cloud Atlas". Here's the excerpt from the Internet Movie Database:

"An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution."

If that doesn't immediately grab you, maybe the trailer will:

If you haven't seen the movie or haven't read the book by David Mitchell yet, please do if you have the chance. It is, however not absolutely necessary to have seen or read it, to understand what Dostoevsky meant by the words "beauty will save the world". You only need to see this short video, titled "How beauty will save the world", to understand why the film is a tribute to art, a scientific and a spiritual story about karma and how six beautiful stories as well as a musical masterpiece called "Cloud Atlas" binds humanity together through space and time.
