Zeke Thoughts: Grass, Happiness and Light

zekethoughtsmusic.jpg

Back again this week with some more of the preachy and musicy. Positivity is best when shared and reflecting upon impactful statements helps us deliberate how we can learn from them. #thoughtfuldailypost is the tag we like to use and @thoughtfulposts is the curation account to whom we have delegated to boost its power to reward thoughtful posts.

I invite you to share in my musings and the loosely-related music I would pair with each.

Grass

Bill Heavey https://groveatlantic.com/author/bill-heavey/ is a new name to me so I had to check him out. Apparently, his website http://billheavey.com/ is not working but Grove Atlantic describes him as "Bill Heavey is an editor-at-large for Field & Stream. His work has appeared in numerous publications including Men’s Journal, Outside, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times."

I was inspired years ago by @lynds to start reclaiming grass space and blogging about it here, I have found a nice comfy niche with #gardenhive and my Pickleman Family Garden blog https://hive.blog/gardenhive/@zekepickleman/the-pickleman-family-garden-late-summer-garden A quote along these lines really caused me to pause and reconsider my ridiculous lawn. No flowers for bees, no food for animals, no room for native fauna. How stupid does that sound?

Now, I still have a ridiculous amount of grass, but I am seriously considering replacing it with clover or some such. I wonder what that would do for my property value. Either way, I love seeing the wild strawberry and other non-grass vegetation creep in and I leave patches of those little flowers when they grow. I do appreciate the appearance of a neatly shorn front yard but will eventually do something positive for the globe and replace it with something more a part of the native ecosystem.

The best I could come up with for the white guy habit of having a lawn was this hilarious song by Mark Rebillet. For those who know him, this will be a good laugh. For the rest, you are welcome!

Happiness

Chuang-Tzu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhuang_Zhou (aka Zhuang Zhou) is a 4th century philosopher partially credited with the founding texts of Taoism. That's pretty legit!

Look at how simple this statement is. Though fulfillment comes not without striving, I find that we can be swept away from happiness by that pursuit. The more I think about it, happiness for me is not a destination, but a conscious interpretation of the current moment. Happiness is a choice.

I wouldn't suggest that anyone ever stop striving. Simply enjoy the strife and be happy this moment. See how that works for you.

Here is a little motivation from someone you have most likely never heard of! Matthew Wilder.

Your Light

I cannot seem to find the origin of this wisdom pearl but it really seems both timeless and timely.

In the age of social media, we are drinking from a firehose of happenings from across the globe. Our media preferences and algorithms feed us all kinds negativity intended to have us join one side or the other, and pitch sticks at the spokes of the opposing faction.

As the machine strives to divide and occupy each of us, it is a struggle to stay objective and fend of the negativity. So many stories along the lines of #floridaman headlines trigger a reaction of conversation questioning the state of humanity. Knowing that idiots will be on parade to make us each feel smarter by comparison, why do these Darwin award candidates have to get you down about our species?

There are some things you can control and others you cannot. Injustices will happen no matter how empowered and compassionate we are. We sincerely need to preserve our motivation, our light, that propels our passion to not only be good, but impact the universe in a positive way. It truly is our only purpose for existing and that light is what fuels us to be.

DON'T LET THE TROLLS AND SYSTEM CONSUME YOUR LIGHT!

Here is a whole album of awesome from the inspirational Electric Light Orchestra featuring the late Jeff Lynne.

at one point, about half of my lawn was in garden. Not by choice. My late husband got the bright idea and had the lawn plowed up while I was away at work. No, he didn't die over that, but, I was very tempted to end him. Frank was not a gardener. He thought he was going to be the gardening director while I did the labour. As fate would have it, there was only one season of that and then he got sick. I used the very real excuse that I was too busy seeing him in the hospital to get into planting a big garden. The weeds grew in and became lawn again. I guess I must have raked the garden level the year before for a reason I didn't even know about.

I can see that happening.

I can't imagine having it dug up while my better half wasn't looking. Hospital would be the best I could hope for!

he was like that .. thought he knew more than he did at times. I picked up on his gardening ability when he suggested we needed half a pound of carrot seeds. He had no idea what I was talking about when I asked if he was going to have the neighbour plant them in their field or was the whole garden going to be carrots. Told him that he could get the seeds he was going to plant and weed, I'd get the rest which oddly enough turned out to be all of them LOL.
