A generation of apathy

Statistics have it that the current young adult generation, Gen Z, who have the higher online presence is actually the most technologically neutral generation. Recently, to further buttress this fact, study shows that for the first time in a very long while in American history, people are generally getting dumber.

The interest in education has dropped significantly, largely due to the high cost of a college degree and in part due to the irrelevance of a college degree in today’s global climate. The entire scenario seems somewhat like a chicken-and-egg situation where fewer individuals wanting to get into the universities cause the price of education to generally skyrocket. Almost seems like a demand and supply crisis.

Unfortunately, this decline is not only taking place in the US but also in other countries like mine where I’ve noticed younger kids not seeing the value of an education because there’s almost nothing for them to look forward to after they get their degree. However, the kids in these parts are not as fortunate as those in developed countries. There’s literally nothing for them if they don’t put in the right amount of effort.

Furthermore, regarding the general brain drain of most young adults, I can’t entirely place a finger on why this could be happening because there’s an ample amount of information available for free online yet so many young people choose to remain oblivious to them.

Recent;y I came across a video of kids in a High School in the US who couldn’t read an analogue watch and I thought it was crazy until I asked a girl of the same age as those kids if she knew who Elon Musk was and she was clueless. Said she had no idea he was a person and thought his name was just “slang”.

A part of me wants to put a little blame on Tiktok and the easy money that was seen to come from doing general stupid shit but that can’t be the problem alone. I’ve further observed that a lot of them just want to “belong” without putting in any effort or learning anything. They want to get wealthy and I guess, keep up with the other rich kids they see on social media. It’s almost like a curse.

Whenever I complain about this general lack of interest in a world that is currently being led by technology, I tend to sound like an old person but it surprises me. The level of apathy that exists among them is incredible.

I don’t know what’s going to make this better or when things might get better but I really hope they do. The world is moving too fast to keep up with people refusing to get informed.

The world is absolutely moving fast, and it will be great if we are able to keep up with the development instead of staying in oblivion to them and chasing fast money with no substance
