I was a curious teenager, a bit intellectual for my age, which in many occasions, left me out of my social circle. At that time I was very attracted to this picturesque author. When I turned 15 in 1983, "Zelig" was premiering one of his most acclaimed works of art. A film, made as if it were a documentary that exposes sensitive themes of human nature through the tragicomic life of the protagonist.
At that time, my admiration for him led me to investigate it, and I discovered that, when I was born, in 1968, already this master had written, starred and directed his first two films: Take the Money and Run (Stole, Fled and Caught) and What’s Up the Tiger Lilly (Lilly the Tigress) a couple of films that expose intense social criticism through extreme situations that rally in absurd humor.
That shocked me a lot, I was 15 and he had already made 13 films. How can you be so productive? So creative?
I, who was already fascinated by his films, was even more amazed by the persistence and tenacity involved in such a prolific artistic life.
That charm has led me to follow closely his career. I remember very especially Small Time Crooks (Half-Haired Rascals) of the year 2000 and
Wonder Wheel (The Wondrous Wheel) of 2018, two films, although very different for being one in a comedy tone and the other a drama, but which have in common gangsters and thieves, recurring figures in Allen’s filmography, studied from different angles in each of these films.
The truth of the matter is that, being some better than others, some more reflective than others, some more comical than others, the career of this filmmaker has been a reference in my life.
Beyond the themes he addresses, I confess a great admiration for his methodology, his perseverance and his tenacity that have led him to make practically one film every year from 1966 until now.
That’s why today I wanted to make you see through this little film review of one of the greatest creatives in the history of cinema that life is just that: Create. And that is to create is to believe that if you can make reality all that we dream.
This is what Master Woody Allen teaches us with his perseverance. As the old saying "wanting is power" says.
And now I ask you: have you had such interesting things happen to you that you made a film in every year of your life?
