The Church of the Virgin of Charity in Havana is an ancient Catholic temple erected between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre, patron saint of Cuba. The construction was made thanks to the joint effort and work of the maroon slaves, the Indians and the settlers who lived in Havana at that time.
This church is located in Del Obispo Street, a strategic point for the access to the port of Havana. Today, it is one of the main architectural and historical symbols of Cuba. It is frequently visited by tourists from abroad as well as by Cuban devotees faithful to the Virgin.
In and around this temple there are many stories related to Our Lady of Charity. According to tradition, the Spanish landing ship arrived on Cuban shores carrying with it a venerated image representing Our Lady. Later this statue was declared the official patron saint of Cuba.
Today the interior of the temple has been modernized while preserving its original style and historical characteristics. This church continues to be an emblematic and devotional point to keep alive the Christian faith in Cuba and to be an active part, both historically and spiritually speaking, of the Cuban patrimony.
