Just Started RisingStar Game - Honest Newbie's Opinion!

avatar

Being new to something or somewhere, has its pros and cons. We all know the cons and how hard it usually is to start in something we are clueless about.
But with those struggles usually comes that sweet sweet experience of swimming around in a sea of new contents that you never knew existed, the thrill of learning about new worlds or trying new games.

That immersive feeling when we explore something new, zoning out of our surroundings into a different realm, and passing hours without realizing! like a child visiting Disneyland for their first time.

The more captivating the content is, the deeper we dive in, and enjoy it!

While I'm exploring this brand new (for me) world of Hive, learning and trying out what it can offer. I stumbled across multiple games being mentioned, one of them being RisingStar game, which I decided today to try it out to see what it's all about.
I will talk about my newbie's experience and newbie's opinion from a newbie's perspective.
Giving an honest opinion and possibly unpopular criticism, hopefully I won't get much hate because of this, as my intentions are to get it to improve where it can.

So without any further a do, let's get star🌟ted!

Nowadays, we can do most of what we need on a mobile phone. Almost everything can be done online easily that way, without any troubles.
So, to readily support mobile phone's experience with your website is a must these days.
An app can be a plus for sure, but not necessary to provide convenience, especially if it's just an old school semi-"text based" game. A mobile friendly website though, is just the norm. 🙄

From the first look, the RisingStarGame website layout was clearly not supporting mobile devices. Something which can be easily done with minimal frontend coding to present a more attractive and easier view to mobile phone users.

Furthermore, the login wouldn't work without a desktop only browser extension, so I had to install the Hive keychain app and use its built-in browser.

Once I've done that, I was able to login.

When I gladly saw that "Play on mobile" button, I thought my struggles would end, but nope!

It took me to a screen suggesting to "generate new mobile link" which asks to open up in the chrom browser instead of loading inside the Hive Keychain browser, then it loads what seems like a broken plugin.

Apparently, for getting a link to play on your mobile, you need a PC!

I'm not sure about the technical difficulties involved, but that seems a little ridiculous.. So hopefully, it's just something wrong on my end causing that plugin or whatever not to load on my phone's browser.

But I will try to generate a link when I have access to my PC and see how that goes.

Stranded in the lands of Buskeria as a lowly level 1 wannabe with no experience, I had the busker card to play!
With barely 10 fans, no luck, and 1 skill point. Illegal buskering was my only option to start the journey and earn some STARBITS, experience, and maybe some drunk fans.

Highly energetic 100% and motivated, I started a few missions on the illegal busking career. Using up 15% of my energy bar every 5 minutes mission.

Doing it for a about 5-6 times, got me to level 2, then finishing my 10th mission after some waiting rewarded me with some extra STARBITS, ending up with 57 experience, 22 mostly drunk fans, and 99 starbits in total... The well known steep curve of progress when starting out fresh in games as usual. 🙁

For now as a newbie, it seems like clicking "start" every 5 mins a few times on that same mission is the only thing I can do in the game.
Hopefully that'll change when I progress, because it wouldn't be much of a game otherwise.

However, unless something is changed or added to this very early stage of gameplay to give the new players a better feel and something more to do around, creating a better first impression, and convincing them to play again, I expect many people would simply try it out, forgetting about coming back once they use up that first energy bar.

I honestly think the game has much more to offer later on, but come on, getting new players to do 5-8 clicks on the same thing while waiting 5 minutes in between, depleting their energy before having any sense of progress and THAT'S IT?

I'm supposed to get hooked right then and there so I'd come back again when my energy fills up. Not starting a new game to do 5 clicks and close it!

Should at least be able to do some "open mic night" before leaving. The coffee I picked up wasn't enough for that needed quicker energy refill "kick" at the start.

Another annoying thing I noticed, the counters on the frontend stops if I move away from the website, which is something you'll do frequently on a mobile phone. Also the diary, xp, starbits, and basically everything, doesn't update automatically, so I manually had to reload the pages periodically.

The game definitely would benefit from improving those minor design issues.
And in general needs some improvements over those technical difficulties, being mobile phone friendly should be on the top of priorities list in my opinion.

Despite the starting out imbalances that most games have, I like the various parameters the game utilises, fans, luck, skill, and income modifier.. Didn't have an experience with most of those yet, but they seem to add richness and variability to outcome possibilities.

And it obviously has so MANY cards, seems like it will become more interesting as I progress and level up.

Overall, it seems like a nice chill game to slowly play.
It will be a slow progress, which is expected, so I will probably stick around for a while and give it more chance, ignoring the inconvenient mobile phone experience I'm having for now. The game is still in beta after all!

And in the end, I'd like to thank the developers regardless of such small issues, for developing and expanding projects on the Hive blockchain.

I hope they take my opinion and somewhat harsh criticism as a constructive feedback to improve the game and most importantly the new player's experience, not focusing only on advertising and marketing, which would increase their organic player base, and get more people playing, FOR THE RIGHT REASONS.

My climb to the fame and riches as a Risingstar slowly begins.

And I will definitely be writing about my progression and experience in it from time to time. Giving my honest opinion about issues, improvements, or lack of, while I play it.

Thank you all for reading and for your support.

Until next time! 🙋‍♂️

I know it's still in beta. And this is partly why I thought some healthy criticism would be good. 🙂

Maybe I'm just not used to being early on anything. Lol

Thank you for stopping by, and best of luck to you too!

Thank you for your feedback and I can't argue with the points you make.

The honest answer is that we developed this game as something to do during lockdown and didn't really think too much about mobile as that is not my area of expertise. I am the only full time developer so deciding what to focus on next is also a challenge!

Once people get into the game many really do seem to enjoy it, as you will see by the steady growth in regular players which you can see on the rankings page in game (just over 2500 actively playing).

I hope you will stick with it and become part of our community. Come and say "hi" in our Discord where you will find many players of different levels who can give you tips.

Cheers and welcome to Buskeria!

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply, this shows you really care!

I knew it was still in beta, just didn't know it was actually still that young. Let alone a single full time dev, must've been a tremendous effort. 👏

I will stick around for sure, just have to figure out why the login isn't always working from keychain app.
I'm not trying to be picky, but sadly mobile phone is my only option to get online currently.

Again, thank you for the welcoming and for your time!
