Skyscrapers, Malls, and Tropical Vegetation. Rambling in Bangkok

It was a trip for the whole day. We started on the southern outskirts of Bangkok, visited several locations of the downtown, walked through the new landscape park in the center of Bangkok and ended the day with a boat trip to one dull place 🙂

1/ Emquartier

The first destination was Emquartier shopping mall by Phrom Phong BTS. It is notable for lush vegetation inscribed in the modern architecture, including an artificial waterfall.

We had visited the place many times so we decided just to have a short walk in it to take images at the key spots and leave sooner than later to save energy.

Another Emquartier's must-visit is a garden at a vast balcony with nice panorama of the modern part of Bangkok:

That's rails of BTS in the image:

The rails are on the level of tree tops because BTS is on a bridge above the street.

Another place that catches the eye, a roof-top resort with a pool and coconut trees:

The same place, a view with neighboring high-rise buildings:

2/ Rambling Around Benchakitti Forest Park

Wanut told me a new park appeared in Bangkok - its expanded and advanced version was opened in 2022. The entrance is free.

The place is young but you already can feel detached from the city there. I had a feeling I was in a vast swamp beyond Bangkok's borders.

The park is covered with walking bridges so visitors can enjoy the high-angle views and, probably, birdwatching (I am going to check this option one day soon).

Blooming of lotuses must be gorgeous in Benchakitti Forest Park.

But in the beginning of February, there were few lotus flowers. But... no problem, the park is amazing with or without flowers.

Benchakitti Forest Park has made Asok BTS station a place to be for a photographer. There is a ton of opportunities for street and urban photography there. Modern shopping malls co-exist side by side with street vendors there, Soi Cowboy nightlife is in full swing, and now this landscaped park has appeared. I will visit this station more than once, for sure.

3/ Strolling Along Ratchadaphisek Road

When we left the park, we discovered this location, Ratchadaphisek Road and a row of high-rise buildings:

In the evening, there is good lighting and a lot of people, both Thais and foreign tourists and expats, so I put this location on my list of interesting places in terms of street photography especially if you have a wide-angle lens like my 24mm to catch both people and buildings.

Of course, it is better to come here when the sky looks colorful. On the day of our visit, it was not quite like that, but Photoshop slightly helped me.

Having chilled out on a bench, we returned to BTS and headed to an area called Bang Rak.

This was me who wanted to come to this area. I thought about shooting Bangkok skyscrapers like King Power MahaNakhon (314 meters), the second tallest building of Thailand:

DSC_7245.JPG

During the day, the views are spectacular. But at night, I was disappointed. It turned out that this area is not too brightly lit. In general, a feeling of emptiness and darkness there. So we didn't stay there for long. I photographed MahaNakhon in passing, not trying to make a photo masterpiece.

There was a feeling that we did not save much by buying Bangkok Skytrain one-day passes 😀 (150 baht/4.7$ each). So we decided to head to another location.

5/ In Asiatique

Honestly, I have never liked this place. Asiatique is a completely fake experience in Bangkok. Unfortunately, many tourists find themselves in Asiatique, despite the fact that they have a minimum of time for such an amazing city as Bangkok.

A concrete hole to siphon time (and money) out of tourists...

Prices for many goods in Asiatique are much higher than normal. There is no coziness there.

Under the bridge by Saphan Taksin BTS, this is where piers to get to Asiatique, Icon Siam, and other locations

If I don't like this place so much, why did I come there? Because we just wanted to have a 15-minutes walk (to make sure there is still nothing interesting in Asiatique 😂). Wanut offered visiting Asiatique and I didn't mind.

I took only one photo there - a beautiful bar that fit the frame amazingly:

DSC_7253.JPG

That bar was a tiny island of of good taste. A carousel, a terrible house of horrors, a ferris wheel - all this is stuck one on top of the other without harmony or logic. Rows of shops, crowds of tourists, a crush at the pier. Sad farm for milking tourists...

We took a boat back to Saphan Taksin, transferred to BTS and headed back to (wonderful) outskirts of Bangkok...

More stories from Bangkok are ahead! 🤠 Subscribe, share ... comment, thank you! 😀

I took these images with Nikkor 70-300mm and Nikkor 24mm f/2.8D on a full-frame DSLR Nikon D750 on February 5, 2023, in Bangkok, Thailand

Those are amazing pictures. Of course, Bangkok is one of the metropolitan cities that has many skyscrapers.

After seeing the beauty of the city that you share with its various skyscrapers I want to go there one day, because in the city where I live there are not even a single tall building

WOW what an amazing walk, so cool to see such beautiful green areas in Bangkok, I dont remember seeing much greenery when I visited there but that was a long time back

I love the reflections on the water

Bangkok turns greener and greener, like, shopping malls and other modern buildings intensively include vegetation. Or, Benchakitti park (in the images) is huge and actually located in the downtown; opened in 2022. Large green spaces in outskirts have got popular in recent years - like Bang Krachao and Rama 9 Park.

Thank you!
