It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.

I know, I post Three Tune Tuesday on Wednesday. It's done by design! I run a Three Tune Tuesday livestream on Tuesday, then post the songs the next day. Want to be the first to hear them? Tune in live!

I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.

This week is all about Spring. Well, mostly, anyway. March 21 is, after all, the first full day of Spring, and it is Aileen Stanley's birthday!

Aileen Stanley was a popular vaudeville artist and singer who signed a contract with the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1920, and ended up recording dozens of records with them. I have a number and will undoubtedly share more of them as the weeks go by.

This first song this week, When the Leaves Come Tumbling Down, was first recorded by Stanley in 1922. It was later covered by a number of famous singers, including Gene Austin, Marion Harris, Bing Crosby, and Nat King Cole. This version is the original, a duet with Billy Murray.

Moving full into Spring, now, we have song originally composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1844. Spring Song was one of his "songs without words," written for piano, without lyrics. Mendelssohn composed eight volumes of these pieces, which were published in his lifetime. The "Spring Song" is the 30th piece of the second volume.

This version is recorded with orchestra and Charles Gorst, who was a notable bird call imitator. See if you can hear him!

My third song for the week is also all about Spring and entitled, simply, To Spring. "To Spring" (Norwegian: "Til våren") is a solo piano composition by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, which was composed in 1880 as part of his collection of Lyric Pieces, Op. 43.

This version is performed by Fritz Kreisler on violin with piano accompaniment. Kreisler began playing the violin at an early age and made his public debut when he was just seven years old. He continued his studies at the Vienna Conservatory, where he was a student of the renowned violinist and composer, Anton Bruckner.

Throughout his career, Kreisler became known for his interpretations of the works of the great composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. He was also an accomplished composer in his own right, writing many pieces for violin, including his famous "Liebesleid" and "Liebesfreud."

Three Tune Tuesday (TTT) is initiated by @ablaze.

I run a live stream of my TTT songs every Tuesday at 12:00pm EDT, then take that stream and share the songs from it here, on Hive, on Wednesday (or occasionally Thursday). These songs are all old pre-1923 78rpm records from my collection, played on my antique phonographs and recorded with a well placed microphone. Like what you hear? Come listen live!

First song I think Nat King Cole did a better version, this lady singer reminds me of the chipmunks...

Third disk relating To Spring, a romantic classical composer, loved in Norway. The piano has always been one instrument I enjoy when played well.

Hahah, yes, I often feel the same about these old vocalists. They were really the victims of nascent technology, which is often why I don't share old records with vocals.

Thought that would bring a smile to your face, fore-runners using the gramophone system did give it their best.

You keep cranking them out and always nice to sit and listen and ponder who else listened to these back in the day and where.
