Three Tune Tuesday - Looking Back

avatar

This is my first Three Tune Tuesday post. For this beginning post I'm looking back - waaaaay back - at some old tunes. Really old. Pre-1925 old. Here is a sample of my collection.

For Three Tune Tuesday this week I've decided to do something a little different than what most people might consider, and I have prepared three vintage phonograph tunes to share.

Starting with one of my favourite ever pianists - Sergei Rachmaninoff - we have Serenade, a piano solo published by the Victor Talking Machine company on their Victrola label in 1922. This is a fun, whimsical piece that really makes me wish I could play the piano (or any other musical instrument, for that matter). There's something enjoyable to me about listening to classical pieces on these old, analogue recorded discs. Much like a black and white photo, these pieces really bring out the soul of the song.

Next is a piece published by Edison on his own phonograph label. The Edison phonographs were widely regarded as the superior phonograph in the day - his was the phonographic "betamax" of the phonograph wars, with a superior technology that ultimately lost out to wider distribution. It didn't help that Edison was a dick and refused to let new music be published on his label (all of which actually had his face on them).

Cesare Sodero was the exception. When recording for Edison he was allowed full reign of what was published under his name, and he produced some dandies, such as this lively recording of Amina - Egyptian Serenade, in 1915.

Finally, the third tune I have to share today is my favourite Fox-trot of all time, The Vamp. This will make you want to get up and dance, I'm sure of it.

So, did you like these? Do you want more? Come visit me on Friday nights at 6:00pm EST at https://blindskeleton.one/radio for Friday Night Concerts. This is a recorded show from my library of songs, but I might also start a live show of Three Tune Tuesday on.. well... on Tuesdays.

Oh wow! You have quite the collection. I remember going through my dad's old records and finding treasures like the White Album by the Beatles, and a Led Zeppelin album or two. Yours is even older. What fun!

They are fun! I scour thrift shops, estate sales, and auctions, and am rarely disappointed. Listening to this music makes me think of what it must have been like to primarily needing to go to music halls and venues for culture. Just imagine!

Nice man! Now these are certainly some tunes that not many people would be expecting I love it hahaha. The old scratchy sound of them adds a really cool element to it!

Oh yeah, absolutely, I love the scratchy static. These things are ancient, and the static serves to also add a reminder and vision that there were actual people back then playing this music who have gained a form of immortality by it. Just really cool.

Thanks for listening!
