Show Me How you Work

avatar

I have had the fortune of working from home for about the last 6 or 7 years (I've lost track - it might only be 5). In a previous life in what feels about half a century ago I had a taste of "work from home" when I refused to be stuffed into a shared, enclosed office space with poor ventilation in what was little more than a closet. I decided in a huff that I was going to take my ball and go find a different sandbox to play in, which was my house. I was not, at the time, fully prepared for "work from home", so my "work area" amounted to little more than a desk in the basement beside the laundry.

At the time I was only able to do that because I had recently been supplied with what was a new-at-the-time VOIP phone set, so I could take my office number with me home.

I have not had a desk phone since.

The job-after-that then happened and brought me back into an office space. Not much to say there other than, at least, it was only a couple miles from home and I was able to either walk or ride my bike to work depending on my mood and the weather.

After that I was hired into a completely 100% remote/work from home position, and I've never looked back. At this point I decided that I really needed a proper work area. Now, my house isn't terribly big and there are a lot of creatures living in it, myself included, so I've had to build a space. It amounts to little more than an alcove - still in the basement - but it's a comfortable work area with everything I need close to arms reach (with the exception of the coffee machine, which is still upstairs). It has gone through a few iterations but, eventually, it has settled into something like this:

It may look a little crowded but it really isn't. The tablet in the foreground is collapsible and fits under the small monitor when I'm not drawing on it. The phonographs on each side are used to play music (perhaps obviously) of different eras (not obviously). The brown one on the left is a Victrola XX-IV which plays old pre-1926 78 rpm records, and the black on the right is a Decca which plays 1926-1941 orthophonic records. I use the Victrola to record songs for my Friday Night Concert series (https://blindskeleton.one/radio). There is also some decoration to make it a little more 'homey' for me.

The wall behind where I set has been decked out as well. I do engage in zoom/webex/video-sharing-of-the-moment meetings with a web camera, and feel that it's nice to have something behind me to make it seem like I'm not actually in a basement. This may or may not work.

Yes, you will see more phonographs there, and a boatload of old cameras - or, rather, a curio full of cameras. What you cannot see is the tall, large format bellows camera on the top of the curio. I am dying to get outside to use that. It needs the right tripod and the right location.

Most of those cameras work, and I do use them on occasion. I'm slowly going through each one individually. @enginewitty was awesome enough to send me an old videocamera that takes 8mm film; I absolutely need to do something with that, once I can figure out what it should be.

And, when the time is right and I really don't want to be on camera, I have a friend who steps in for me.

So, any pictures of where anyone else works?

What's the difference between a rain gutter and a clumsy outfielder?
One catches drops, the other drops catches.

I do believe I remember seeing a few photos of the cats lying on the desk. It's wonderful that it's working out for you. I didn't realize your camera collection was SO extensive! When my desk gets cleaned up I'll check back with a photo of it. lol

This is my setup currently. Please excuse the mess, lol. I didn't think cleaning up was a fair representation of my space LOL. The laptop and monitor on the right are my work PC, as we've been permanently moved to work from home.

The PC on the left is my personal PC. It's a little chaotic as I still need some more shelving in here but it works pretty well!

Nice Diggs! And awesome collections too.

with the exception of the coffee machine, which is still upstairs

Might be time to trade in that cat for a coffee maker for your office.. lol j/k. 😎 A possible future office upgrade perhaps. 😄
