Frogs of War - a possible change

avatar

I've been spending time thinking of ways to improve the player experience in Frogs of War, and my most recent post - https://peakd.com/hive-176981/@wwwiebe/frogs-of-war-a-card-sample-update - revolved around redesigning the playing cards to improve usability.

One of the biggest obstacles I have been facing is that the playing cards double as the playing pieces on the board (or, in the case of animals, the ecosystem). Using cards as playing pieces is difficult. I had 3d printed some chits to stand the cards up in, but they were small and a little more difficult to use than I had envisioned, so I got to thinking about ways to improve that.

Then it hit me.

3D printed animals.

A 3d printed frog for the frogs.
A 3d printed dog for the dogs.

At least for the prototype; when I go into production this will be a custom made piece, but for now my 3d printer will work.

I'm starting with a simple frog. After printing I took a dremel slicer to it and sliced a slot in the back to hold the card. This ended up wider than I was hoping, but as a prototype for a prototype I wasn't too concerned.

Putting a card in it looks like this. Currently I still have the hex shaped cards - I haven't printed any of the new rectangle cards yet - but this gives a good idea of how it'll look and work.

A single frog.

A frog with an added weapon.

I think I have a good size for the frog, too; it needs to be big enough to be easily handled, but not so big that it takes up more space on the ecosystem than it should.

I'm hoping that I can make these transparent cards work; I'm beginning to be a little concerned that my vision and reality are going to be mutually exclusive, so I'm already beginning to make alternate plans and designs.

I soon am going to need to update Tabletop Simulator, too. As always, I'd be thrilled if anyone has TS and would be willing to help me flesh out the game with a play test!

I think the 3D animals as card holders is a brilliant idea

I really do like this idea, too. I've always envisioned this game being played somewhat like chess, and I think with the pieces holding the cards upright it brings it one step closer. Plus, it makes actually playing the game just a little easier as well.

This is awesome! I haven’t seen your game until now but I think this is definitely a fantastic way to add a layer to the game that will be both a fun prop but also important to hold the cards!

Jealous of the 3D printer you have! What one is it? Just curious. We don’t have room for one now but we want to get one to make our own stuff one of these days.

Hey, thank you very much! Every time I think I'm on to something good, either I or someone who is playtesting it finds a way to make it better. I love positive, forward progress.

I've got a Creality Ender 3, and I love it! Mostly. It's not the fastest printer around, and some things I've wanted to print will take overnight and into the next day, but the under $200 price range made that trade off worthwhile. There is also a laser engraver attachment which I do not yet have, but think would be just a boatload of fun.

The way the frog look is good for a videogame too, at first I thoughts so then it was way too detailed.
I have looked for Table Top Simulator but could not find have you uploaded somewhere?

Thanks! I've got some additional animals printed out now that I'm working on, too.

Tabletop Simulator is on Steam (not Steem) at steampowered.com. It's a great piece of software that simulates tabletop games. I'm using it to help test Frogs of War but, after some recent changes to my game, I need to update my game on Tabletop, too.
