A Very Fine Night for s'mores - HiveBloPoMo 8

It's autumn. It's cool. It's dark early outside. And that means that it's a great time for an evening fire.

I'm not the best at starting fires, as one might be able to tell from how this jumble of twigs and crap is all jumbled together. I'll admit that I cheat; I use butane fire sticks and fire starters and all but throw gas onto it to get it going. Once the fire gets going I like to keep it stoked because, if it goes out, I'm not about to get it going again. Once it gets going, though, we've got fire!

There's certainly something calming about sitting by a fire in the dark night. There was just me and the dog for some time. And a beer. That hit the spot, too. A nice way to relax for at least a few moments.

Here, take a moment and simply enjoy the sounds of a fire.

Eventually one of the boys caught wind that there was the fixing for s'mores out in the back with me, and he found his way to join me just long enough to melt a marshmallow and mash it between some graham and chocolate. He disappeared back inside just as quickly. If I hadn't had the opportunity to snap this photo I might have forgotten he exists.

I had only my phone for photography with me, and it isn't the best in lowlight. Luckily, fire's have plenty of light. It's almost mesmerising to watch the flames dance back and forth, up and down. I can understand why humans have been fascinated with fire since the dawn of humanity; it keeps us warm, gives us light, cooks our food, and is just awesome to watch.

Even when it isn't leaping into the air it's beautiful to watch and enjoy.

I need more and longer nights like this. I'm already looking forward to the weekend.

We havent fired up our fire pit these year, last year we used it a lot

and I dont know if its just because i am stubborn or old school, I like to start the fire without using a fire starter other than paper twigs and a lighter, Luckily i have done many over the years and am not to bad and gettign it going without to much effort
