CRU Das Peusangan; Camping and Fun with Sumatran Elephants in Aceh-Indonesia

Last year, during the world madness due to the Covid 19 Virus, I chose to stay sideways to one of the Sumatran Elephant conservation places in the province of Aceh, Indonesia.

Pada tahun lalu saat kegilaan dunia karena Virus Covid 19, aku memilih untuk bercamping ke salah satu tempat penangkaran Gajah Sumatra di provinsi Aceh, Indonesia.

Kampung Antara, Pintu Rime Gayo sub-district, Bener Meriah district, Aceh province is a place located in the mountainous area of Bener Meriah which is known to have the largest Sumatran elephant habitat in our province, Aceh.

Kampung Antara, Kecamatan Pintu Rime Gayo, kabupaten Bener Meriah, provinsi Aceh adalah sebuah lokasi yang terletak di kawasan pegunungan Bener Meriah yang dikenal memiliki habitat Gajah Sumatra terbesar di provinsi kami Aceh.

Wild elephants there are one of the animals that must be protected at this time, considering that hunting for elephant ivory is one of the businesses in the black market that can make elephants extinct.

Gajah-gajah liar disana menjadi salah satu hewan yang harus dilindungi saat ini, mengingat perburuan gading Gajah menjadi salah satu bisnis di pasar gelap yang dapat membuat Gajah punah.

Elephant breeding which is named the Conservation Response Unit (CRU) Das Peusangan. This conservation serves as a patrol unit against wild elephants roaming around the Pintu Rime Gayo forest.

Penangkaran Gajah yang diberi nama Conservation Response Unit (CRU) Das Peusangan. Konservasi ini bertugas sebagai unit patroli terhadap gajah-gajah liar yang berkeliaran di seputar hutan Pintu Rime Gayo.

Currently there are 4 tame elephants who are handled by Mahout at CRU Das Peusangan, the task of these elephants is to herd wild elephants back into the forest so that conflicts between humans and elephants can cause the extinction of Sumatran elephants that are hunted by the community.

Saat ini ada 4 Gajah jinak yang dipawangi oleh Mahout di CRU Das Peusangan, tugas gajah-gajah ini adalah untuk menggiring gajah-gajah liar kembali masuk hutan agar tidak terjadinya konflik antara manusia dan gajah yang dapat menyebabkan punahnya Gajah Sumatra yang diburu oleh masyarakat.

An unforgettable experience for me to be able to stay for two days and two nights at the conservation center. There is a large Ginset available for electricity needs and also sufficient water for our consumption.

Pengalaman yang tidak terlupakan untuk saya bisa menginap selama dua hari dua malam di balai konservasi tersebut. Disana tersedia Ginset besar untuk kebutuhan Listrik dan juga air yang berkecukupan untuk konsumsi kami.

The food we bring is sufficient for our needs while there. The mahouts who served there were also very friendly.

Bahan makanan yang kami bawa cukup untuk kebutuhan selama berada disana. Mahout-mahout yang bertugas disana juga sangat bersahabat.

During my stay there for two days, I was able to witness the daily lives of Mahout and Sumatran elephants, the friendship of Humans and Animals who are tasked with protecting the universe from the disturbance of hunting for wild elephants and also keeping wild elephants from approaching plantations and residential areas.

Selama bercamping disana dua hari saya dapat menyaksikan keseharian Mahout dan Gajah Sumatra, persahabatan Manusia dan Hewan yang bertugas menjaga alam semesta dari gangguan perburuan gajah liar dan juga menjaga agar gajah-gajah liar tidak mendekati perkebunan dan juga pemukiman warga.

Seeing nature up close is really fun, especially since the Sumatran elephant is one of the animals that must be protected. Hopefully their friendship will continue to be able to provide comfort for the sustainability of the forest ecosystem of Pintu Rime Gayo. And hopefully we can come back to visit CRU Das Peusangan again next time.

Melihat alam dari dekat sungguh menyenangkan sekali, apalagi Gajah Sumatra adalah salah satu hewan yang harus dilindungi. Semoga persahabatan mereka terus mampu memberi kenyamanan bagi keberlangsungan hidup ekosistem hutan Pintu Rime Gayo. Dan besar harapan bisa kembali lagi mengunjungi CRU Das Peusangan ini.
