If I Saw $250 On The Floor I Would...

If I was walking on a sidewalk and saw $250, I'd be shocked because that's a lot of money in Nigerian currency. I reckon it's also a lot in other parts of the world so who would be careless enough to drop that in the first place?

So many thoughts would run through my mind if I saw such money and my number one concern would be my safety. It could be a trap and there might be kidnappers hanging around waiting for me to fall for their bait.

It could also be a ritualist bait too and I wouldn't want to turn to a yam or a goat. I know I sound crazy but I am from Nigeria where since childhood we were told if you pick up money from the ground that isn't yours, you'd turn into a yam.

We saw it a lot in our movies. When the child turns to a yam, the person who had set the money trap comes out to pick up the yam and then uses it for occultic purposes that would give them more money.

When I was younger I saw on national tv that someone was arrested for turning a child to yam. The person held the yam in hand and was told to confess by the raging crowd. I've also seen the same scenario on the news but with a goat.

These are hilarious situations and also superstitious but I'm not about to find out how real or not they are. I have never picked up money on the road in my life and I always say a little 'sorry' to whoever must have lost their money when I see any on the ground.

I doubt I would see $250 on the road though, these days the money barely drops from the pocket before someone else picks it and puts it into their own pocket. But if I did see and put my Nigerian superstition behind me, I would take the money and keep it.

I won't hand it over to the police because it won't get to the owner. They steal from us on a regular day so I don't think it wise to give this money to thieves. I would keep this money and hang around the area for a while waiting for someone to come looking.

Then I would talk to people around who either work or live there and leave my contact so that anyone in search of the money would call me with proof that the money is theirs.

I'd eventually invest the money into crypto if no one claims the money after a while and it'd be marked in my head as a debt I'd have to pay anytime in the future.

How about you? What would you do if you found such money on a sidewalk?

Shoooweee Nigeria has many superstitions. I suppose if I grew up with the legends of being turned into a yam, I wouldn't want to touch the money either.

At least you are honest enough to admit that if nobody claimed it after a while you'd keep it and invest it.

I know that in South Africa if I took 20cents to the police they'd probably think I'm a nutcase and have me put in a mental ward - nobody takes money to the police here, it's unheard of lol. Investing it in crypto sounds like a plan.

Thanks for your entry, have a good weekend.

South Africa seems more like the West than African 😄 we just assume here that everything is better over there

It is the yam or goat for me. 😂

It was as if I knew that investment would later come up in your post. Good thing, @wolfofnostreet

And I don't even like yam in the first place. Maybe if it were sweet potato I wouldn't mind

It's funny -- I don't really know the difference between the two. However, I would be equally sorry if you became a yam or a sweet potato. Or a goat, for that matter.

I remember reading a news article from Nigeria years ago. It was a rural area. A man had stolen something from the market. He was chased, but when they caught up with him, he had turned into a goat (allegedly). The goat was promptly arrested. I will never forget this: the local authorities were quoted as saying, "We are not a backwards people. We will first have a trial to determine whether a man can, in fact, turn into a goat before proceeding.

I wonder how they ended up making the determination. I have a bad feeling that things did not go well for the goat. Is that literally where the expression "scapegoat" comes from? Blame it on the goat. It cannot argue in its own defense.

I really enjoyed this post.

Omg 😂😂😂 You read right, we are not backwards people. We just haven't cracked the science of a man turning to a goat, or a woman giving birth to one. I once saw news of a woman who gave birth to a goat 😄

I wonder how they ended up making the determination. I have a bad feeling that things did not go well for the goat. Is that literally where the expression "scapegoat" comes from? Blame it on the goat. It cannot argue in its own defense.

You're cracking me up 😄

Wow.

I'm a doubting Thomas and find it hard to believe these things until I witness myself.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for suspicious yam-like occurrences

you'd turn into a yam

I had to laugh at that. I remember from when I worked in Nigeria that you guys were so superstitious🤣

Oh well if nobody would claim, investing in crypto would be a good idea, as I agree turning into the police is a waste of time.

Very superstitious. I don't believe the things I hear, they're always so shocking.

Wow! This is so funny from a Nigerian perspective. But out of curiosity...

it'd be marked in my head as a debt I'd have to pay anytime in the future

How would you plan to refund this debt in future time?

I'd have the $250 to give back whenever the owner finds me.
