$1 Sushi In A Rotating Conveyor Belt

Sushi anyone?

Sushi!

Sushi is one of my favorites in Japan and there are tons out there. Every now and then, I crave it. Sushi can be expensive, but there are restaurants selling it cheaper, for as low as 125 JPY (or 1 USD) per plate. My boyfriend even said that during his high school days many years ago, it was less than 100 yen.

Kaiten Zushi but we dined late so many empty ones

Kura Sushi is one of these restaurants. Their sushis are conveyor belt sushi, or KaitenZushi (in Japanese: 回転寿司), meaning you can get a plate from a rotating track next to your table.

Let's eat at Kura Sushi

Entrance

We went to Kura Sushi Shinjuku last Sunday, few minutes before their last order time. There were many empty seats already.

I've never been good at getting sushis when they're being rotated and sometimes they're not the freshest, I mean I don't know when it was made and added to the conveyor belt. So most of the time, I order from the tablet they provided. I can choose my sushi because sometimes, the ones I liked aren't in the conveyor belt.

Our orders arrived, we're getting it on the upper area

If you're super hungry already, you can grab sushi right away which is what I like about kaitenzushi. When you spot good and delicious-looking sushi, don't hesitate to get it!

Whenever I get sushi, I always order ebi (shrimp), maguro (tuna), and salmon. Depending on my mood, I get tamago sushi (egg sushi) as my last-to-eat sushi but last weekend, I didn't order it because I was already so full.

Our first round of orders

I always eat my sushi with sweet soy sauce, and the normal soy sauce for my boyfriend. But last time, he introduced me to sushi with salt (塩, read as shio), instead of soy sauce (たれ, read as tare). He also had matcha (green tea) on it which I never tried and my first time hearing it but he said some people in Japan do it. I might try salt and matcha on my sushi next time.

Sushi with matcha powder

I'm not too adventurous with my sushi and most of the time, I leave the ordering to my boyfriend so I don't have to read Japanese think, and just eat. 😅 But waaah, my boyfriend wanted me to eat this corn sushi. I like corn but in sushi?! I don't know.

Corn sushi

Well, it tasted better than I expected it to be. I guess this was mayo so the combination was a bit good.

engawa sushi but I was expecting it with a leafForgot the name, maybe you know this seafood?

There are so many kinds of sushi. Aside from remembering their names in Japanese, I also need to know what seafood it is. So yeah, I don't remember the names of most of the sushi I ate. 😂 I told you, I just eat and eat. 😂

Special shrimp

Sometimes they don't come in pairs especially if they are of high quality or special. This special shrimp sushi is a favorite!

For people who can't eat raw, there are charred sushis. If I remember correctly, they come with cheese so I'm not sure if it's completely charred.

There are also meat sushis, and even burger sushi but I came here for seafood so I never order meat in Kura Sushi. There are desserts too!

Making my matcha drinkAdding hot water

You can make your own green tea drink in your table, with the matcha powder available. Often, I drink only cold water but during cold season like today or whenever I'm in the mood, I make my own hot green tea and drink it.

For kids, you can play a game called ビックラポン (read as Bikkua Pon) where you can win a gacha. It's pure luck (is it?!) though. Whenever I go to Kura Sushi, I play it. (Sorry, I'm still a kid at heart!) For every 5 plates you throw in the bin, an animation will play on the tablet, and at the end of it, you'll know if you win or not. It's not a win all the time, and this time, I got a win after 25 plates!

Empty plates go here to this bin

GrrArgh I didn't win

What I won after 25 plates

I got the salmon roe sushi keychain!

If you go often, you might be able to collect all the prizes. 😅 To be honest, the gacha game is one of the reasons why I like Kura Sushi among others.

List of all prizes with a rare item, 1 in 500!

When the Detective Conan movie was released, they partnered with Kura Sushi so the gachas were Detective Conan collectibles. If you're fond of animes, I think you can get collectibles here in Kura Sushi.

Tempura udon

My boyfriend ordered hot tempura udon as his finishing meal. I think it's a Japanese way to finish with this hot noodle soup, as I've seen many do it.

Did we eat too many?

Kura Sushi is always full of people, mostly tourists wanting to get a taste of sushi, and a long queue but we always reserve online and go there past 9 PM. It's late for most (I know right!?) but my boyfriend prepares late usually we wake up in the evening on weekends when my boyfriend doesn't have work. If you don't want to queue, maybe you can try their online reservation but I think their reservation is only available on their Japanese website.

Don't forget to eat sushi when you come to Japan. Kura Sushi has branches nationwide, and a lot in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Promise, their sushi is delicious and cheap too!

Thanks for reading!
See you around! じゃあ、またね!

That's too many, wow. For 1USD per plate I think that is a small serving but I also think it's worth the taste? 😅

It's the normal serving. 1 USD is already cheap in Japan.

Eating raw food could be dangerous so we need to be careful and cautious. I don't think eating it in PH is a good decision but if we know the food is being prepared like JP standards, I think people can have sushi there jud.
