Oppression in the Work Environment

Curbing oppression at the workplace is a critical endeavor that demands a multifaceted approach. Some work environment are full of toxicity that some workers don't feel happy when the thoughts of going to work hit their minds. To create an environment where all employees thrive, organizations must proactively address some issues and foster a culture of inclusivity.

This can be achieved by promoting awareness of different forms of oppression, and bias that exists in the workplace through workshops, seminars, and training sessions. Encourage employees to recognize their own biases and develop a deeper understanding of the experiences of marginalized groups.

In addition, the management should establish and enforce comprehensive anti-discrimination policies that explicitly prohibit oppressive behaviors such as bullying and sexual harassment, etc. Also, there should be an implementation of inclusive hiring practices, equal pay initiatives, and accommodations for employees with diverse needs.

Leadership is key in every organization as it is going to set the tone for what other members of the organization will look like and how they will behave towards each other. It is key to actively work to diversify leadership and decision-making roles within the organization. The representatives at the top, that is, the selected few that are saddled with the responsibilities of running the affairs of the company can influence company culture and set an example for embracing diversity.

More importantly, everyone should be encourage to have open conversations about oppression and discrimination no matter who is involved. In most situations a safe spaces isn't created for employees to share their experiences, concerns, and suggestions for improvement due to the fear of being punished or fired. This should be discouraged in its entirety. A safe environment should be created for people to share their mind when the need arises.

In line with the aforementioned, there should be clear channels for reporting incidents of oppression, bias, discrimination, sexual harassment, etc. However, these channels must be easy to access and confidential.
