HEEDING TO MY MOTHER'S LATE NIGHT ADVICE

There are some opportunities in life that if we do not utilize when it comes our way, we may not be able to have the same opportunity again. There are so many actions that I'm glad I took in my life that have made positive impact in my life. At that point in time, it would look like I'm being punished or that my parents, especially my mother, do not like me. I understood the great favor they have done for me when I look back and reminisce on the journey so far.

I was urged, advised, pestered, forced and all sort of term that you could imagine to learn a trade after Secondary school before my University admissions are processed but at first it all fell on deaf ears. I wasn't interested in any of such activities that I will have to serve as an apprentice under someone.

The idea that I had of being an apprentice is associated with being sent on errands such as buying food for my boss, sweeping the workshop in the morning and evening as the youngest apprentice (not by age, but by months/years of experience). I felt I was too big for such practices.

The first two months or thereabouts after Secondary School, my parents did all they could to start learning how to make female hairs but it was all to no avail. I was interested in the series of outings, parties and visiting friends - the freedom I had was intoxicating. My mother had already met with a woman that had a salon close to our house to pay for my apprenticeship but I didn't make myself available.

Trust mothers - they have their way of talking to their child that he or she doesn't not have a choice than to concur. On that night, I was fast asleep when she came to my room and spoke senses into my head. She made me understand that all their efforts isn't for today, but for my future. She made me understand that being educated or graduate isn't sufficient nowadays. She spoke to me, leaving me with a choice to make, at this point she was going to give up on pestering me. It was at this point that I made the decision to start learning how to make hair.

The decision to take up the trade is a blessing that I'm always glad I didn't forfeit the opportunity. I made money from making hair from my roommates and course mates in school throughout my 4 year course in the University. I have taken up making hair as an hustle till date and it's still paying my bills.

To sum it up, I can categorically say that the action that I took in life that had a positive change in my life was learning how to make hair for women.
