YORÙBÁ NAMES, MEANINGS AND SIGNIFICANCE
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog at this hour. Names are unique form of identity and this is not an exception with Yoruba names which often have deep meanings. Africans believe the name of a child will have a great impact on the child's destiny, hence the names are carefully selected.
These names are not selected in a rush, it takes some time to come up with it because it is the identity the child will be known for all through his or her life. Well, sit back, relax and enjoy all that I have packaged for your reading pleasure.

Yoruba names are selected for a child based on a number of factors. Some of these factors may include:
• The type of family, for example, a royal family, family of drummers, family of ifa worshippers, family of masquerade worshippers etc
• The type of child, for instance, twins. Twins have their unique names based on the order of birth.
• Events that occurred before, during or after the child's birth. For instance, a child that was born with a cord on the neck, a child that the mother or father died before he or she was born etc
• The kind of destiny or what they want the child to be become when he grows up

Simply put, a name to the Yorubas is more than just a word. It has deep meanings which could be got from either a story or an event. The parents of a child have only one opportunity to name their child, hence it should be given serious, deep and significant thought.
