The Trouble With Texts

It's too easy to miscommunicate using electronic devices to talk to people. Predictive text or multitasking can send a message that is easily misconstrued by the recipient. The wrong wording can cause a mountain of trouble for the unsuspecting writer.

The old-fashioned way of writing by pen and paper is a more deliberate form of communication and a method that is more reliable to use in a situation where you want to be fully understood. Nothing beats face-to-face, but barring that, it's best to take your time and be deliberate about what message you intend to convey.

Today everything is so immediate and people don't want to wait for a response to their inquiries. The majority of people own at least one cell phone or electronic device in the United States and many other countries. When I first got hooked up to the internet in the 1980s I was in awe at the ability to chat with people in Sweden, India, and the Philippines. I made friends around the world.

I was (and remain) very interested in culture and using a now-defunct application called ICQ you could chat simultaneously with someone and see what they typed as they were speaking. It was immediate. No postage is required. No other application that I am familiar with has that feature. It enabled some lively discussion, minus video.

Communication makes the world function and electronic communication, although it has its place, texting isn't ideal for thoughtful communication. If emotions are involved it is easy to say something you wish you could retract.

I like to reread what I write. It saves me grief. Do you have tips to share, or do you struggle to communicate through texts? Do you have a funny story about a miscommunication you experienced? Please share!

Thank you for reading. I am alive in snowy Pennsylvania. We will have a white Christmas. I cleared a foot of snow off my car this morning and broke my windshield wiper. If I don't see you before, Merry Christmas! Jesus is the reason for this season!
