The Missed Call

Denise leaned into the fence overlooking the family vineyard next door. She saw trucks pulling out heavy laden with bottles of the rich reds and white wines her father was internationally known for. Denise knew that her husband Colin would be overseeing the loading dock and that he'd be exhausted when he finally came home.

The phone rang but she was reluctant to answer and break this solitude. Denise reached for her phone on the table but the call went to her voice mail. She let out a deep breath and walked slowly toward the sliding glass doors deciding to check the message later. As she skid the door open she saw flashing lights nearing the winery out of her peripheral view.

Denise grabbed her phone from her pocket where she just stashed it and dialed the winery with trembling fingers, craning her neck to see the vehicle blocked by the trees foliage along the road.

The business voice mail kicked in. Denise hung up the call before the beep and looked for the emergency vehicle. It pulled into the winery with sirens screaming. She dialed Colin's cell phone number, but the call went directly to voice mail.

Denise blinked quickly trying to hold back a building sense of dread creeping into her chest cavity. Running to the front door she grabbed her car keys and opening the garage door with a button, she backed her car out of the garage. In her haste in backing her car out she nearly hit a bike leaning against the garage wall.

The short time it took to reach the winery from her driveway moved like a slow motion movie action scene. The last thing she remembered was the stretcher being pushed with the white sheet covered body coming from open door of the winery dock.
