Kid's Clubs

When I was growing up I watched the original Mickey Mouse kids club. TV was a treat, not a "right." Children were never put in front of the TV as a substitute parent or babysitter. I loved the singing on the Mickey Mouse Club.

I think kids were much happier those days. We spent a lot of time playing outdoors and had outdoor toys, or used our imaginations. Mom kicked us out early in the day and we knew to return for supper. If Mom had to call us, we were already in trouble. We had chores and we spoke respectfully to adults. We never called adults by first names, that was "fresh" talk.

I had no experience as being part of girl's club and nI dreamed of that sort of thing. I read books in the cold months or played out doors.

Times, they are a changing, and the sense of entitlement that younger and younger children seem to possess is troubling. It's not that I feel that I missed out, quite to the contrary I feel that I was the one who benefited more without all the stresses of people constantly trying to get in touch with you.

We have more stress with the continuing demands of work and social commitments. The world is bulging with news but sometimes we need to be alone, and alone with God. It's important to spend time reflecting on what's important in life. Here is a hint: it's not that text or news story.

The kids clubs these days are missing a lot of sunshine and bonfires, marshmallow and smoores.

I love freedom of turning off and reflecting on what's going good as well as planning my next adventure sans demands.

I suggest we all start singing and stop texting for a day.

ABSOLUTELY.

I remember Mickey Mouse - I longed desperately for my own ears! I don't think I ever got any though. We, all five of us, came home when my mother rang the cowbell. I don't think she knew where we'd been, but mothers have a canny way of knowing everything. It was a good time, a better childhood, we learned so much out on our own. How to be careful in a tree, how to spot poison ivy, how to step on stones in a stream bed.

Nice freewrite.
