Old city of Jerusalem - Market Friday street photography (series of photographs).

avatar

And again, as usual, Jerusalem is the city where I am ready to go every week. To meet people, to taste new interesting food, to buy species for my kitchen, to drink beer, to take photographs of people and of the mood of the market, that was packed again. And again - not many tourists, but many local travels, not really buying a lot, but making noise and returning some needed feeling of life to these empty streets.

Published for the Market Friday led by wonderful Denise @dswigle.

The evening light just complimented the scenes I saw.

My favorite place to stop and to eat is the Falafel near the Damascus Gate.

The magic place to buy species. You can imagine the smells it contains.

Thank you for walking with me. I will continue this walk with two more posts about this day and about the feeling of the Middle East market madness that has a very specific smell and taste, deafening sound connecting all the different screaming, talking, offering voices.

I love that you broke into the scene in the drawing of the day, the evening, throwing the shadows into the street, allowing the brilliance of those shards of light, the last of the sun as it passes into the evening. It is easy to see that you are in a traditional or orthodox part of the city as with so many of the women take beauty/modesty to this level. (the Orthodox in the US are truly the only ones that are devout) Hidden beauty, covering their head at all times, with scarves, wigs, their sheitel, either/or I believe? Their beauty becomes visible but, it is inconspicuous and the woman may be attractive but unavailable. A culture that would be difficult to marry into, and, most difficult to adhere to without being born into it. I admire them in so many ways, to be honest with you. Their friendships are forever, their beliefs bond them, their camaraderie is heartwarming, It is funny to see these women shop among stores that have short-sleeved shirts and cropped tops, even more so to work side by side. I suppose it is the same working with a devout Muslim here, side by side. The difference is great, but, the cultures have meshed nicely where I live in Washington, DC. I see the understanding between people.

I am thrilled to walk through with you. It is like going on an adventure when you take me to these markets. The sights, sounds and I can guarantee the smells are something foreign to me. I want to thank you, watching these cultures mix is an extravaganza to me. Thank you so much!!!

#MarketFriday loves how our cultures differ and then again, how much they are alike. Many of those things are seen as people live their normal lives, shopping in their everyday environments. Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages. Along with the fact of what is normal for where you live? These are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I had hoped that posting here will familiarize you with the world around you just a little bit more. Viewing it from a more personal level as opposed to the newsworthy level gives me a better understanding of the people and a view that is often not seen on television. Sometimes, it seems like I learn more on some social media about a certain incident than what the news tells me. Your support of the tag is always and forever appreciated. Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
  3. Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated)
  5. Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
  6. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
  7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. If you don't and someone reads it, there is nothing to tie #MarketFriday to that post.
  8. Please only one post each week. Believe it not, I run out of voting power if you put in many more than that.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!
