As they say, there’s a first time for everything. If it’s good, it’s wonderful, but if not, then not so much—like what happened to me when I got bitten by a dog. I’ll tell you about it.

After Holy Week, everything goes back to normal: school, work, everyone’s daily routines—mine included going to the auto shop.

I went back on Monday, and everything was fine, but when I went on Tuesday after breakfast, my mom was still at home. She was surprised I came back so soon; she was having breakfast. She was surprised to see me.

I told her what happened. We went out to the patio so I could wash up and see how bad the wound was, but when she saw that it was something that needed attention, she changed her clothes and we went to the first-aid station—thank God there’s one nearby—and we left, me still in my mechanic’s clothes.

We arrived at the clinic’s emergency room. A neighbor who is a nurse was there; she told us to go get the tetanus shot or toxoid first, which is what they administer in these kinds of cases.

Once the shot was done, we went back to the ER so the on-call doctor could see me. I waited a moment because there were already other people waiting. When it was our turn, my mom told her what happened. She looked at my wound, prescribed some pills, and outlined the treatment. They couldn’t clean and dress the wound right there because, as strange as it sounds, they didn’t have a single piece of gauze.

image.png

I don’t know if the dog in question is a stray roaming the streets or if it’s a dog with owners that was just out walking. What really surprised me was that it had already crossed the avenue toward the workshop.

Once home, my mom called an aunt who works at a pharmacy to get prices for the medications. One was an antibiotic to prevent infection: Cefadroxil, and a stomach protector to go with the antibiotic: Esomeprazole, but we already had Omeprazole at home, and that worked just as well.

First, I washed it thoroughly and carefully, as they told me, with water and blue soap, several times. Then I dried it with gauze, applied Betadine, cleaned it again, and put on a bandage to protect it for a few days and prevent it from rubbing against my pants or the bed while I slept.

I thought they were going to give me stitches, but they said dog bites aren’t stitched up because of the risk of infection, and since it wasn’t that deep, it would gradually close on its own.

I had a week of rest. During those days, my sister came back from her trip. Since she’s a nursing student, she took care of the wound and applied a cream that helped with healing and also had antibiotics. Later, they stopped putting the bandage on because it was drying up and wasn’t so red anymore.

I’ve gone back to the workshop. This week I haven’t had any pain, but I was a little afraid of running into that dog again, so I asked my mom to come with me these days. Guess what? We saw it, but it was on the street. I mean, we don’t know if it has an owner, because if it does, they should keep a closer eye on their dog and not leave it outside for so long, and they should help cover the cost of the medicine.
