An amazing hike to Peak Musala with a Furry Friend

avatar

Hi there Hive Family,

It was one of the last sunny days without clouds for the following at least 10 days so we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and visit Peak Musala (The highest peak on the Balkan peninsula - 2925 meters). I have already visited this peak several times but it was always via the same route. We were taking the lift to the final station where the ski slopes were beginning, then walk via the tourist pathway to the peak. But this time no. To every peak, there are at least 2 or 3 different routes that lead to the same destination, so this time we decided that we will climb all the way from the city of Borovetz. No lift. Then take a circle route that is much more exciting but also more dangerous.

We got up early in the morning because it was going to be a long hike and caught the sunrise on our way to Rila mountain.

IMG_20211005_085120.jpg

We were very early in Borovetz. It is now autumn and the people are eagerly waiting for the winter season to begin. Not a single soul near the most famous hotels. We went to the nearest pavilion to take a coffie and over there soaking up some fresh sunlight was a big black dog. I guess a local one since it did not have an owner. The dog was very friendly and while we were heading back to take the trail, it followed us as if we were a family.

IMG_20211005_085127.jpg

That was such a pleasant surprise. We were so happy that we had a companion with us. From this moment on, we became inseparable.

IMG_20211005_092819.jpg

When we were stopping for a brake. It stopped too and waited for us. Other people were passing by and it did not follow them. It stayed loyal with us. Always and only with us.

IMG_20211005_094528.jpg

The dog is very smart. It followed us throughout the way, but also lead the way too. A real smart mountain dog. We named it Musi. Abbreviated from Musalencho which is a word derived from Musala. It was only logical since we were going that way.

Musi knew how to take care of himself. On our way, we passed through several rivers and it stayed hydrated all of the time.

IMG_20211005_111903.jpg

After a few hours, we reached the first Lodge. Everything was closed so we ate a couple sweet things and rested for some time.

Musi took a bath before the long steep ascend that was ahead of us.

IMG_20211005_114925.jpg

Not even one cloud and veautiful scenery.

IMG_20211005_115315.jpg
IMG_20211005_121412.jpg

Musi did not have issues passing through any obsticles.

IMG_20211005_123705.jpg

A well deserved local brake before reaching the Sphinx (The top rock formation in the distance).

View from the top of the Sphinx.

We continue our ascend and the sights are just opening now. Amazing scenery.

Musi is also enjoying the views. It is only natural, I guess🤣

Some close shots of us. The perfect duo.

The climbing continues. Musi is on top of his game.

IMG_20211005_144034.jpg

Amazing panoramic views. The Lodge in the distance is our final point - Peak Musala.

IMG_20211005_144651.jpg

Local peak - Small Musala.

IMG_20211005_145245.jpg

After Small Musala, we pass a region called the Trions (Saws). Because of its steep and very edgy surface, it is going to be a challenge for all of us.

IMG_20211005_150839.jpg

We have to climb all of this to get to the top.

No worries! We got this!

IMG_20211005_151841.jpg

We are going up.

IMG_20211005_151153.jpg

And we are going down. Looks like a scene from Indiana Jones seeking a treasure. Completely ludacris.

IMG_20211005_152651.jpg

And we are finally approaching Peak Musala.

Lodge Musala on 2925 meters high. Time for a photo session with Musi and a long deserved rest

We got tired of taking pictures. It was quite an adventure to ascend those saws and depressions.

IMG_20211005_155024.jpg

While Musi sleeps, we will reload and prepare for the descend.

IMG_20211005_153302.jpg

Long and tedious descend awaited us.

IMG_20211005_165002.jpg

IMG_20211005_194739.jpg

As usual, we completed the descend in complete darkness. Musi activated his night vision and was able to guard us from any local animals. He saw everything perfectly and his eyes glowed like an owl. We knew that he was around, nevertheless got spooked everytime we saw his glowing eyes 😆

Here is a recap of my adventure. 36,30 km. and approximately 50 000 steps.
