H. denisova Shown to have Persisted Almost to the Younger Dryas

Genetic analysis of our DNA has revealed that humanity is far more of a melting pot than we have ever suspected. Legends of giants, trolls, brownies, and faerie peoples may well have been rather more accurate reports of naturalists than, well, fairy tales, given the discovery of multiple human species and that we are their hybrid posterity.

H. neanderthalensis are the familiar iconic cave men of 20th Century anthropological representations. Once thought to be little more than brutes, new evidence of their rapacious intelligence, which should have been obvious from the fact their brains were ~25% larger than our own, have hinted that their failure to alter their environment with structures was not due to inability to conceive of such structures, but of a cultural imperative like the Prime Directive of Star Trek, to not alter the glorious natural environment they lived in, but to be competent to thrive in it despite the almost arctic glacial climate.

Neanderthals were far less social than are we, and tended to live in small tribal and family groups rather than the far larger tribal groups and clans we did. This exacerbated the extremity of the difficulty of their profession, which was specializing in the largest and most deadly game of the ice age environment, such as wooly rhino, mammoth, and included the most dangerous predators of the day. It remains amazing to me that a lone hunter armed with nothing more than a pointy stick would not only successfully take down a bull mammoth massing over ten tons, but would do so regularly, and survive to old age in the process. Their cultural elitism must have been infuriating to men that could only in hordes drive such game over cliffs aided by fire and dogs.

The people of Europe and Asia are shown to be hybridized with H. neanderthalensis, while the far wider genetic diversity in Africa has revealed no such hybridization.

In the last two years quite significant discoveries both archeologically and archeogenetically have shown that H. denisova produced art, which only our human species had previously been thought capable of, and last interjected their genes into our species as recently as 15kya, just prior to the cataclysm that precipitated the Younger Dryas that plunged Earth into a nuclear winter for a thousand years and caused the extinction of almost all mammals larger than 100 kg, and no less than 35 genera.

In a cave sacred to Buddhists in Tibet, Denisovan DNA has been found in sediments, likely coprolithic in source, both predating H. sapien occupation and contemporaneous with it. Given that the gene that enables Tibetans to thrive in the oxygen reduced atmosphere caused by the great elevation of the Tibetan plateau has been acquired by hybridization with H. denisova, that cohabitation in Tibet seems to have been a genetically beneficial event.

However, prior to the end of the height of glaciation around 15kya, a massive amount of productive coastal lands were inhabited, such as Doggerland in Europe, where the sea now separates England from the continent, and Sundaland, in South East Asia, where today island archipeligos stretch from Malaysia to New Guinea but was then a part of the Asian continent.

Sundaland seems to have been where H. denisova last hybridized with us, as in unknown civilizations that thrived in the verdant jungles now subsumed by ocean at about the time the glaciers began overflowing the former banks of their limits, about 15kya our species mingled. Gunung Padang has been estimated to be up to 25k years old, and in Pohnpei at Nan Madol the similar massive bulwarks of stacked natural basalt columns remains unreliably dated. The intriguing questions we must ask to understand the genesis of such archeological remnants are now immensely complicated by the genetic contribution of Denisovans to the peoples of the Pacific region, Australasians and Melanesians.

Early the claim was made that H. denisova may have averaged well over 2 meters in stature, which would have caused them to tower over Neanderthals and ourselves by over half a meter. While H. naledi in S. Africa seems to have left no recent remains, H. floresiensis, the Hobbits who have been discovered to have lived on the island of Flores, adjacent to Komodo, of dragon fame, have been dated to relatively recent times, less than 50kya, making them contemporaneous with the apparently quite cosmopolitan civilization of Sundaland, where Denisovan giants and aboriginal peoples mixed.

From Hobbits a meter tall, to Denisovans nearing 3 meters tall, it is ever more necessary to reconcile fairy tales with the actual reality of antediluvian humanity. Far more truth than expected seems to have been retained by our myths and legends. We can only prove such people existed by their latest dated remains, but it is absolutely certain that those most recently dated remains aren't the very last individuals of their species'. They're only the last examples we have found, and fossilization, especially in hot, humid climates like S. Asia, is an extreme rarity.

Only recently mammoth remains have been shown to be only a few thousand years old. Again, the rarity of such remains being preserved means what we have found remaining is not the last individuals that roamed alive. The statistical likelihood of fossilization suggests that for every such fossil, many thousands of unpreserved individuals lived and died we will not find evidence of. It is almost certain that our Bronze Age ancestors did see and know mammoths, and possibly many such ice age species we have no proof lingered on after the Younger Dryas only because fossilization is so rare.

This is just as true for human remains as elephants, if not more so. Trolls, giants, and brownies, elves, or hobbits, of the faerie folk seem to have not been fantastic inventions of imaginative story tellers, but the actual meeting and interactions of diverse human species recounted by oral historians. Discoveries of Denisovan DNA in Siberia and on the Tibetan Plateau as well as the prevalence of it in the islands formerly part of Sundaland and surrounding islands indicate that H. denisova were extremely widespread, possibly even as far as the Americas, and their great stature suggests that the many giant skeletons claimed to have been found in 19th Century archeological digs in the Americas may not all have been spurious. Denisovan DNA is prevalent there, and the dating of DNA is certainly just beginning to be possible, and is absolutely ripe for reconsideration as all new technologies are certain to advance in sophistication and be improved over time.

Given art that could only have been created by H. denisova on the Tibetan Plateau by ~170kya, and the certainty that highly advanced technological capabilities provably were used to create the prehistoric megalithic structures found today in Peru, Rapanui, Egypt, Lebanon, India, and elsewhere, and the certainty that H. denisova and H. neanderthalensis lived far more recently than the paltry proofs of their physical remains we have found, the assumptions of archeologists regarding the development of civilization are certain to be far more fantasy than are fairy tales.
