Una Cuentacuentos que redescubre su voz / A Storyteller Rediscovering Her Voice

Buenas buenas, en esta ocasión quiero comentarles acerca de mi experiencia durante mi participación en el Festival Internacional de la Oralidad XXVI - Barquisimeto 2019, organizado por la Unión de Narradores Orales Escénicos de Venezuela (UNO-ES). Yo tenía 3 años sin contar cuentos, ya que en ese período de tiempo había nacido mi hijo y yo había tenido 2 mudanzas, y todo eso consume mucho de tu tiempo, igual no dejé de leerle cuentos a mi hijo y de buscar historias que me nutrieran, pero como dice mi directora: "tu no encuentras los cuentos que vas a contar, ellos te encuentran a ti."

Reencontrarme con mi grupo, volver a los escenarios para ensayar las historias y todo el proceso de montaje (que se asemeja al de las obras de teatro), reírnos, llorar, abrazarnos, me hacía falta y esa adrenalina que se siente antes, durante y después de cada ensayo y función me hizo reconectar con algo que amo, contar historias.

Ese año sentí mucho entusiasmo, porque pude participar junto a cuenteros Colombianos (que son muy buenos). Fuimos a un barrio de mi ciudad, una población muy humilde. Nos llevó un grupo llamado Latidos Son, organización llevada por unas hermanas católicas, quienes buscan sacar a los niños de las calles dándoles clases de música, canto y danza, así como otras actividades culturales. Ellas se encargaron de llevarnos a 3 escenarios diferentes, todos distribuidos por la localidad y pertenecientes a su organización.

Este fue el único escenario en el que no usé un micrófono (ese día). Asistieron muchos niños, fue una linda y nueva experiencia para mi, pues solo una vez le había contado cuentos a niños, antes solo contaba cuentos para adultos.

Son públicos diferentes, y recuerdo haber contado una fábula (cuento de la literatura, no propio) titulado: El Perro del cerro y la Rana de la sabana. Y en los ensayos me costaba cambiar las voces para crear esas características que permiten diferenciar a los personajes, así que me enfoqué más en las actitudes que ellos podrían presentar, ya que la Rana era valiente y el Perro era muy cobarde, tomando así las posturas corporales y actitudes necesarias para marcar la diferencia entre los personajes.

Entre los mismos compañeros de cuentería nos ayudamos a tomarnos las fotos, reconocemos que es un trabajo de equipo y estamos para apoyarnos y tener un registro fiel de nuestro trabajo, luego nos pasamos las fotos que corresponden a cada uno. El público fue muy amable en recibirnos y en agradecimiento, al finalizar nuestro turno de contar historias, ellos nos cantaron y nos mostraron unos bailes, de todo lo que han aprendido en esa escuelita. Y como estamos en Venezuela, se fue el servicio eléctrico, pero las canciones y el sonido de los instrumentos esa tarde, me acariciaron el alma, sentí agradecimiento, gozo, alegría. Me brotaron las lágrimas y sentí que estaba donde debía estar.

A pesar de las dificultades, si creo que todos tenemos algo maravilloso que aportar en esta vida, y por ahora esto es lo que yo tengo para dar.

Good morning, this time I want to tell you about my experience during my participation in the International Festival of Orality XXVI - Barquisimeto 2019, organized by the Union of Oral Storytellers of Venezuela (UNO-ES). I had 3 years without telling stories, since in that period of time my son had been born and I had had 2 moves, and all that consumes a lot of your time, still I did not stop reading stories to my son and looking for stories that nourished me, but as my director says: "you do not find the stories you are going to tell, they find you."

Meeting again with my group, going back to the stage to rehearse the stories and the whole editing process (which resembles that of a play), laughing, crying, hugging, I needed it and that adrenaline that you feel before, during and after each rehearsal and performance made me reconnect with something I love, storytelling.

That year I felt a lot of enthusiasm, because I was able to participate with Colombian storytellers (who are very good). We went to a neighborhood in my city, a very humble population. We were taken by a group called Latidos Son, an organization run by Catholic sisters, who try to get children off the streets by giving them music, singing and dance classes, as well as other cultural activities. They were in charge of taking us to 3 different stages, all distributed throughout the town and belonging to their organization.

This was the only stage where I did not use a microphone (that day). It was a nice and new experience for me, because I had only once told stories to children, before I only told stories to adults.

They are different audiences, and I remember telling a fable (a tale from literature, not my own) entitled: The Dog of the hill and the Frog of the savannah. And in the rehearsals I had trouble changing the voices to create those characteristics that allow differentiating the characters, so I focused more on the attitudes that they could present, since the Frog was brave and the Dog was very cowardly, thus taking the necessary body postures and attitudes to make the difference between the characters.

We recognize that it is a team work and we are here to support each other and to have a faithful record of our work, then we passed the photos that correspond to each one of us. The public was very kind to receive us and in gratitude, at the end of our turn to tell stories, they sang and showed us some dances, of everything they have learned in that little school. And since we are in Venezuela, the electricity service was out, but the songs and the sound of the instruments that afternoon, caressed my soul, I felt gratitude, joy, happiness. Tears came to my eyes and I felt that I was where I was supposed to be.

Despite the difficulties, I do believe that we all have something wonderful to contribute in this life, and for now this is what I have to give.
