SUSURROS

WHISPERING

The first time it happened one afternoon, while I was dozing during sunset. The autumn breezes were hitting my window and several of them brought me a different scent; one that I had never perceived even in my ethereal nights. It caught my attention and I went after it. Like a sleepwalker, I made my way to the fountain and, dripping with the desire to meet him, I slipped on several steps. I took a few turns to the entrance hall, as if dancing in a whirlpool of illusions.

I thought I was still asleep, as I believed that sleep did not leave me and I was still in my dreamlike faculties, but I realized my mistake, as I tried to push my body through the door and felt its solid touch. I took a deep breath and came to my senses, I felt like an idiot being manipulated by intangible things. I went back to my room ashamed to be seen by a tenant, but as I took a step onto the first step, I felt a blow to my chest like the lashing of an angry man. I staggered for seconds and on top of that I hit the surrounding wall, then fell down to rest for a while.

I woke up by inertia, perhaps, then began to recognize how strange it all was, another effect of my interrupted memories? I sat up again to go up to my room, it was very strange that none of the tenants had stopped by to see me. When I was in front of the door, I entered agitated as if I was short of breath, because some uneasy voices began to torment me. They were like whispers that became faint and diaphanous at the same time. They would dissolve, but then return with force like the fury of a storm. I had to look for a shelter, a place to hide, because I thought that the vibration of a whole city was running through my body.

I covered myself with my sheets while the darkness became more intense. I uncovered myself again, because I thought that blindness provoked more strength in the wailing. I turned on the lights and looked at myself in the mirror, I thought I had reached a degree of acute schizophrenia, I could not even find myself anymore. The voices were like prayers uttering everyday laments, like a couple's quarrels, a boss's scolding of an employee, a parent's reprimand to a child. However, and in contrast, there were others that were sweet like the warm words of a lover; like the verses of an "I love you", like the soft singing of a mother to her child, like a tender child laughing in her father's ear.

All those sounds and sentences reached my eardrums for no apparent reason. I felt bewildered, scared, I wanted to run away from the overwhelming whirlwind. I was left with my arm hanging down, wanting to hang myself, until I heard a clear, soft voice, which brought the others down with a puff. It was the voice of a girl I knew and with whom I shared part of my adolescence. Her name was Amanda; a friend from the past, she had grown up and before she was eighteen, she had moved in with a man who had stolen her heart. But last I heard, she was unhappy and now pregnant, and I confirmed it with the whisper of her regrets. I felt sorry but there was nothing I could do, as I just wanted to get rid of this curse that had taken root in my head.

I never found a way to get rid of this faculty curse, so I stayed with it. The voices of the city continually visited me but Amanda's was special, for her situation was so sad that it overthrew any other that imposed itself. For days I listened to her lamentations like a priest in a confessional. I was intrigued without that discomfort my new gift was causing me. Amanda's life with that man was terrible; his mistreatment prevented her from evolving. She was so cheerful, so alive and smiling, but she lost that light, replacing it with an ominous filth that was slowly leading her into an abyss. And that day came, when her words invoked death, I became upset.

I screamed at her as if she were right in front of me, then I came to my senses and went out to look for her. I thought about going to the police but I didn't know her address, so I started digging through my memories to see if I could dig up anything. I couldn't think of anything, and time was ticking away as if Amanda's life was running out. Night came, and as dawn fell, her voice faded with a sigh. I was bleary-eyed and wrapped in warm tears, and that was when the voices left me alone, just for a little while.

The next day the news came out, a pregnant woman who had committed suicide by overdosing on pills, the pain was gone and I didn't grieve again. The voices came back, suddenly I knew how to control them. I vowed that I would not let it happen again, that no serious regret would escape my hands.
