Not all cartoons are for children (Ignorance is not an excuse)

I have been a lover of cartoons and anime since my childhood and have learnt a lot from them especially in terms of improving my grammar, speech pattern, accent and thought process to a certain degree. It also helped me academically as it allowed me think outside the box as compared to a majority of my colleagues back in high school and University.

As an adult, I still spend a lot of time watching anime- old habits never die especially since satisfaction and knowledge is obtained from it. Unfortunately, I see a lot of adults say things like "so you still watch cartoons" or "cartoons are for children, grow up already" and yada yada. These statements are simply wrong and are spoken out of pure ignorance and lack of enlightenment.

As much as there are cartoons and animes for children's entertainment, there are also adult cartoons. Cartoons and animes are tools used to address a wide range of topics from lifestyle to entertainment, sports, politics, religion, lifestyle, war, romance, hatred, racism, sexuality and lots more. Hence it will be wrong to conclude that cartoons are simply for children.

The mentality that 'cartoons are for children' often results in parents not filtering the cartoons within the reach of their children thus unintentionally exposing them to R rated content which may negatively affect their behaviour in the long run.

Cartoons such as Scooby-doo- where are you?, Pinky and the Brain, Chip n Dale rescue rangers, Teenage mutant Ninja turtles, PJ Mask, Puppy Dog pals, Vampirina, Jimmy Neutron and lots more are specifically designed for children's entertainment and are highly recommended for children since they're basically broadcast on children's cartoon channels.

In fact popular cartoon channels such as Disney and Nickelodeon have split their channels into Nickelodeon and Nick Junior, Dsny Channel, Disney XD and Dsny Jnr in order to differentiate their matured content from the children shows, thus allowing parents to fill the gap by limiting their children to the "Jnr" version of their channel- Dsny Jnr and Nick Jnr.

Cartoons such as Family guy, American dad, Stephen universe are not for children as they are often used to address controversial issues, contain explicit content and sometimes vulgar languages which children should not be exposed to. In fact, the Steven Universe cartoon was banned by the chief executive office of the television regulation in Kenya for glorifying Homosexual behaviour. It was also considered not appropriate for children in the UK and USA and has been marked with a PG rating.

The Family guy cartoon contains several deleted scenes and is in fact banned in countries such as Russia, Malaysia India, Venezuela, South Korea, South Africa, The Philippines, Taiwan, Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Iran.

Other cartoons have been banned in certain countries as well, which I pointed out in the article- Ten (10) Cartoons Banned in other countries

The ever popular Simpsons cartoon may seem like it's for children but common sense media recommends that only children ages ten (10) and up view the show due to it's sometimes extreme use of language.

If you're not convinced yet then I'd recommend you watch the The Boondocks cartoon which was previously broadcast on the Sony Max channel and had a majority of its content tagged 18+. This cartoon featured the gangster life from the African American perspective and racism in the USA.

I quote- "The Boondocks gives commentary on American politics from a black perspective. The series accomplishes this by using satire and controversial statements, such as one of the opening lines in the series, "Jesus was Black, Ronald Reagan was the devil, and the government is lying about 9/11" Source

Animes such as Mononoke, Shigurui, Death Note, Hellsing Ultimate, Tokyo Ghoul, Berserk, Ajin and lots more are my kind of anime since I enjoy the 'blood and gore'. They are very inappropriate for children's viewing due to nudity, sexual violence, and torture.

You'd only allow your children view these if you intend to breed psychopaths.

Conclusion

In lieu of the above, it is the duty of parents to filter the cartoons that are made available to their children so they wouldn't be exposed to contents that would affect their lives and mental health negatively.

There are children cartoons and there are also adult cartoons hence the belief that "cartoons are strictly for children" is wrong and is simply a statement made out of ignorance.

Here is my article on Anime shows that kids should never watch and animes I would recommend for children- Top Ten (10) anime for children.

As an adult you may find these interesting- Ten (10) Dark recommended Animes and Ten Romance Anime to watch.

Couldn't agree more.
Parents should broaden their perspective and learn that cartoons and animations are categorized as for kids and for adults.

Children being exposed to all sort of cartoons due to parent's ignorance is nothing but failed parenting at its finest.

There are a lot of things parents must know and apply, but sadly some parents don’t know this.

There's no training for Parenting, so we can't also blame them.
It's not taught in schools.
One must simply seek information about it but some information cannot be acquired right away.

My understanding is that the majority of the cartoons from way back @uchihanagato, like 20s, 30s, 40s, and subsequently afterwards the cartoons were never made for kids, they were originally made for adult humor. Then Disney came along, and I've read quite a few articles on the perversity of the cartoons and full length movies with subtle innuendos in them, also how they have carried over to the modern cartoons and how they affect the children and others.
You did an excellent writeup on this subject here. Good job!

Disney came along and contributed to the diminishing intelligence of this generation and the next. Gladly The Simpsons and family guy are still there to keep the legacy alive.

I remember watching the boondocks on Sony max while growing up. It was strictly 18+ as it was a demonstration of racism in the US from the African perspective and how the blacks go through shit in order to survive.

That's what cartoons are meant to do- fill the gap and address issues that cannot be addressed directly.

Education is the key. Parents should be more careful since anything is easily accessed thru the internet. Thank u for this article

One of my all time favorites is South Park. They've done some crazy things on the show and I'm pretty sure it's banned in many countries or at least some episodes are.

You have done a very good article on this topic. It is very true that a vast amount of cartoons are for adults and not for children, and it is our responsibility as parents to know what our children watch and if it is suitable for them according to their age.
Cartoons are a powerful form of narrative expression. They can tackle difficult topics with humor and carry messages that would otherwise be difficult to achieve. I like them very much.

They literally have attempted my murder and are trying to kill me with V2K and RNM. Five years this has been happening to me, it started here, around people that are still here.
