New Year Sunset Shots from the East Hawai'i Coast
Hiya all.
My girlfriend/partner, @kai-sunrise, a German friend, Leslie, and I spent New Year Day down on the Red Road (also known as Kalapana-Kapoho Road and 137), which has several lovely local gathering spots here in far East Hawai'i. This one of my favorite parts of the Island. Beauty abounds everywhere, in the people and in the landscape. Nature at its most majestic and awe-inspiring.
After enjoying a few hours at the Kalapana/Kaimu Farmers Market, and a short refresh back at a dear friend's bungalow where we slept the night, we all went to Kehena, a black sand (pulverized lava) beach which has been a beloved community clothing-optional beach since 1955. My good friend, Audrey, took me here an hour after I touched down on the Island, almost four years ago. I've been in love with this beach ever since.
Toward the later part of the day, some really stunning sunset displays began appearing in the skies, some of which I happily share here.
These first two photos are from Kehena Beach, looking toward the South-West. These were taken a bit earlier then the next batch.
These last four were taken from the car, as we were approaching the Red Road-130 juncture, in Kalapana. @kai-sunrise gets the credit for these shots (using my phone), as she was on that side of the car.
I hope y'all enjoy these snippets from a truly wonderful day. 🙏💚
Do you live near Hilo? I’m looking to visit in February for a Natural Farming class with Drake. Pure KNF
Hiya! I'm about an hour from Hilo. I'm way out in the jungle in far East Hawai'i. KNF is quite popular our here, along with permaculture. Welcome to Hive, by the way. Your introductory post is truly stellar. 🙏💚
Sounds dreamy! It truly is a BIG island lol. I came in 2019 for Korean Natural Farming before. Any suggestions on how to get a ride from Kona to Hilo that’s not the bus?
Thanks for the warm welcome and great feedback.
Yes, it certainly is! It's about 108 X 130 miles across. There are people driving back and forth all the time, so catching rides is usually pretty easy. I'd suggest posting a request on the Coconut Wireless Telegram group.

Absolutely, and thank you!
Joined! Mahalo! Let me know if you need any Trader Joe’s crack!😆
Excellent! Haha...I worked for Trader Joe's for 6 years, one in New Jersey, and five in Arizona.
No crack needed lol
