My Entry for the #POBPhotoContest: Round 30 (Texture) - The Textures of Lava - Lower Puna, Far East Hawai'i - April 25, 2022

Warm greetings all. 🙏 💚

This week the theme for the #POBPhotocontest is texture. As I let the theme percolate in my awareness for a while, I came to lava as my subject for this week, as the astounding array of textures that different types of lava possess make it an easy choice for me.

I took these photos this morning, up at my friend Sundog's place, which is an open-air bamboo yurt that he constructed for himself up on the lava from the most recent lava flow (2018). They depict the two flat slabs of lava that he uses as paving stones to his fire pit. Even with just these two (which are still just variations of ʻaʻā lava), you can see the notable difference in texture between the two. Lava is very porous, being made up multitudes of air bubbles frozen into stone. The differences in the bubble size between the two is due to variations in temperature, position, and composition.

And with that I happily submit my entry for the #POBPhotoContest: Round 30 (Texture)!
