Silver 1 Franc (1914)

avatar

Back with another silver coin from my collection, this time a Belgian 1 Franc from 1914.

A relatively small coin and imo somewhat boring looking piece.

fr2.jpg

On the front side we have King Albert I and the coin reads:

ALBERT·ROI - DES·BELGES - G.DEVREESE.

for

ALBERT KING OF THE BELGIANS G.DEVREESE.

fr1.jpg

The backside has the coin value and minting date surrounded by an olive branch and oak branch along with the french motto:

L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE

for

Unity Makes Strength

This coin is almost as big as a euro coin and has 5 g of .835 silver, or 4.17 g of silver. That's about 3.10 $ with today's spot price.

My coin is a bit beaten off, but most details are still visible. Another neat piece of history :)

Quick Specs

  • Composition: Silver (.835)
  • Weight: 5 g
  • Diameter: 23 mm

Pretty cool collection. Do you stack to sell at a higher value or as a personal collection?

This coin looks boring as stated. Hmm, Looks like that’s the head.

Surprisingly, I prefer staring at tail. A bit sharper.

Kudos to how you’ve been able to safely keep them safe to this day. Words on it are still very much readable.

Its very plain, but i quite like plain. Not so shiney as my newly minted coins for sure.

Do you have any coins from the 1600s? 1670-1695 seems an interesting period.

I really like to see them as apparently the numbering starts to change from an i to a 1.

A very nice silver coin. It's first time I seen a Belgian 1 Franc, and it's so well made. Given it's age it's condition is excellent !

Thanks again for showing the Silver Treasures, @trumpman. With the rising Silver prices and premiums, I'm becoming more of a window shopper.

I was going come and ask if it was the same currency as the French Franc?

Turns out it isn't...

Franc:

The conquest of most of western Europe by Revolutionary and Napoleonic France led to the franc's wide circulation. Following independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the new Kingdom of Belgium in 1832 adopted its own Belgian franc, equivalent to the French one, followed by Luxembourg adopting the Luxembourgish franc in 1848 and Switzerland in 1850.

Awesome piece!

Boring because he's not wearing a hat! How about a Pickelhaube, perhaps a Shako maybe? Definitely a Fez! And you know what a Fez looks like.

A good Pickelhaube attracts the German gals at the time.
