50 Piastres Silver Coin (1952)

avatar

Today's coin comes from Lebanon, a 50 Piastres Silver piece from 1952, or 50 Qirshā.

What I really like about this one is that there are no kings or queens or other faggots!

Instead, the front side has a cedar tree (a main feature of Lebanon's flag too) and reads

الجمهؤريَّة اللبنانيَّة
REPUBLIQUE LIBANAISE
1952·١٩٥٢

for

Lebanese Republic
Lebanese Republic
1952·1952

On the other, we got two oak branches with fruits and the denomination, 50 Piastres / 50 Qirshā.

Pretty much the size of a euro coin:

There's not much silver in this piece, 5 g of 0.600 silver or 3 grams of silver. With today's spot price that translates to 2.16 $.

Not great, but imo a lovely looking piece! Plus, I like the weird letters 😂

The Lebanese silver is nice. It's a unusual small coin !

Finally hahaha a coin that isn't dedicated to a king or a queen or even a god. It looks shiny

With the huge inflation in Lebanon, they would be happy to have some real silver money again.

Was chatting to someone recently saying they still rationing electricity.

All letters outside of English tend to look weird to me. I guess it's because I can't read them most of the time.

Thanks for the reminder, @trumpman. A few decades, ago, when Silver was having one of its blast-offs, I noticed, some World Coins, in a Local Coin Shop. These beauties were only, five cents (USD), each, “you pick”. Later, they were sold by the pound or kilo, like $2. Some were as large as a US Half-Dollar, and some were dated, in the 1800s. With Silver and her premiums higher, these World Coins, have gotten interesting again. And 1922s are a century old. I am going to check these out, later:

Nothing Silver, and even a few old US Wheat Cents. Thanks again, @trumpman.

The Lebanese Cedar is a beautiful shade tree and is considered by INCU Conservation as a Vulnerable Species. And, it looks like a Christmas tree too, just draw in the decorations.

Facinating coin and interesting design. The letters do look very foreign.

Oh, no my friend. I wrote nonsilver as there is very little silver in the coin. Not fake 😉
That kind of coins is part of long way of real money to todays fiat. Maybe I'll try to write some post in the future.
