Secrets of Organ Playing Week 53 – Das alte Jahr vergangen ist BWV 614 – JS Bach

Bach’s Orgelbüchlein is a treasure of 45 chorales treated in a diversity of ways. Here we have Bach the teacher at work. Not only does he provide excellent composition for his students, but he also sets forth models as to how the chorale can be treated. Das alte Jahr vergangen ist (The old Year has passed) is a rather solemn piece. The chorale is very elaborately ornamented. There is much chromatic writing which underlie man’s reflection on his sinful nature but also looking forward to the future. This setting is scored for two manuals and pedals.

The instrument I am playing is an Australian organ by Charles Richardson in 1912 and has a very prominent Edwardian character. This being so, I had to register with caution. The chorale is soloed on the rather large-scaled Open Diapason.

I wish you have a chance to play on a Thuringian Baroque organ this elegant chorale some day...
